Hello sc290:
Welcome to IndiaMike! There are alot of great planners here on IM and I'm sure they will be along shortly to help. In the meantime it might be helpful to tell us your areas of interest? Flora/fauna, architecture, history, Yoga, ashrams, food, music etc a daily budget? - ie. a few hints to IM'ers who have done a similar trip - so they can assist you in the best possible way! ![]()

India is a very big and a very diversified country. One part of it is completely different from the other. In North one the beautiful places like Ladakh, Kashmir, grand places of Rajasthan and rich culture here. In South you get the backwater, ayurvedic massages and great beaches. In East you get a very different experience of the Himalayan beauty. In West you get the fast life of Mumbai and cool beaches of Portugese colony at Goa. So it completely depends on you on what sort of India you want to see and at what pace. Also what is the budget you are travelling at.

Temples in India are some of the most fascinating structures according to what I have seen and experienced!!! I just love visiting temples (and mosques) for their art and architecture (not for any religious reason as I am an atheist!!!). Khajuraho, Orchha, Mandu, Ossian, Ranakpur, Mt. Abu, Konark, Badami, Aihole, Pattadakkal, Belur, Halebid, Somnathpur, Sanchi, Vidisha, Udaygiri, Sravanabelagola, Mysore, Srirangapattina, Agra, Ajanta, Ellora, Tanjore, Mamallapuram, Sarnath, Varanasi, Rishikesh, Badrinath, Haridwar, Ujjain, Gwalior, and thousands of other places in India that are all so very interesting that you will need more than 7 weeks to see them all or even just a small fraction of them all!!! Hope you get to see at least some of them during your travels here. Food will never cease to amaze you here as you will get different varieties as you cover the breadth and width of India. I am sure you will love it all when you get here!!!
Cheers, Aadil.

In case you are more traditinal kind of traveller who will not dare to convert read on temples in India fall in following categoreis -- 1. Temples of great religious significance but not huge from architactural point of view .Mostly in north . 1a.Some are up the hills you can take Char-Dham (yatra with some added trekking to some of Panchkedar, Gaumukh ,Vasukital etc), Vaishno devi that will give you taste of rural hillside also. in Aug-Sept these places may be sparsely crowded . 1b.Temples of Kashi Vishwanath in Varanasi or other Jyotirlingas (except Rameshwaram nothing is huge ) Ayodhya, Mathura , Vrindavan 2.Huge Temples of Madurai , Brihadishwar (tanjore),Tiruchandur where you can admire the grandeur and beauty of structure at lesure becasue there are no long queues 2a.Wonderfull temple of Tirupati where yu cant roam around becasue of long queue 3.Temples where no worship is being conducted now but architacture is great --Konark, Ellora, Khajuraho , Elephanta tourists also keep Goa, Agra and Rajasthan on itenery. For villages other than what can be seen during trekking you select some villages of Rajasthan or rural Pondicherry or maybe Gokul , Nadgaon ,Barsana (plenty of ashrams there, but mainly catering for Bhkati, not teaching of Yoga ) will say more after i hear from you. I'd add Kanchipuram, not far from Mammalapuram/Mahabalipuram. There are several temples and temple complexes, most of them seats of active worship.

Following things should be kept in mind by all the ladies who are traveling alone:
1) Trust your instincts: If you feel something is wrong scream, flee or do what ever you feel is appropriate. 2) Body language: proper body language plays a very important role 3) Try to sit or stand next to other women or family groups 4) Clothing should be both fashionable and appropriate 5) Carry enough money in your shoe or money pouch. ![]()
