Sleeping Bag, Stuff Sack,ep Pad and shoes

i used to camp alot as a kid but its been years since ive really roughed it...

ok, let me start off with what i bought ... some nike trail trainers. i just cant wrap my head around carrying boots so these must do. if i am not wearing proper footwear for the situation - i wont go on. but my worry (after reading lp guide) is that these are new funky fabric that is very porus. they should be fine up in lahaul/spiti but kullu/pin parvai?? im hoping that i wont get caught out in too much rain (yeah right, it rained 2 weeks straight last time i was there) - but im wondering your advice on this poor purchase. great price and great shoes. i will scotchgard them prior.

purchasing a 3.25lb slumberjack bag (mummy) poly fill. half price. good to -5C for travel june-october in hp.

purchasing a therm-a-rest pad folds to 20x6.5 inches. 9oz.

big question: the info on the bag says it stuffs to 9x18". should i get a bag 10x18 or can i get a smaller compression sack?? i could use some help here.

thank you -

I'm not sure what exactly you're planning to do, but if you're going to be carrying a load on uneven terrain, you should probably work on getting your head wrapped around boots. Turning your ankle is very easy with with low-top trail runners. Anyway, you can buy trail shoes with Goretex, but I've never tried such a beast. I always wear boots.

Not sure I understand what you're asking about the stuff sack. If they say it compresses to 9x18, that's probably about as small as it'll go. 10x18 should work just fine, if you can't find 9x18.

no difficult hikes, no hikes over 7 days, no long hikes without pony/porter. the shoes are designed for trail, but im not kidding myself - they are not hiking boots.

im not going mountaineering or paln to traverse glacier or climb a hill of broken rock.

just walking. like ... the easiest treks listed in lp guide to indian himalaya.

the guy i met last time i was in hp and we are hooking up again is older (61). he takes it slow and always has someone to carry much of the gear.

i only carry a 29l pack as it is regardless of taking stuff out for the treks. add to this..sleeping bag/roll/shoes which ive not factored in here. i travel realy lite despite the full blown music system im now carrying and digital photo non-sense.

thanks

If you are going to Spiti remember that last year it really rained a lot there between July and August, making the use of boots almost compulsory, for comfort and safety. Moreover in Spiti you will walk a lot over sharp scree. In my mind no doubts: wear boots.
