Sleeping Bag - do I, don't I???
Hello all, I'm umming & ahhing over whether to bring a sleeping bag on our trip to India.....
We arrive in Delhi at the beginning of November and will be heading south (via the west coast) for a few months. I'm wanting to pack as light as I can, but I also want to make sure I am warm enough. What do you think? Should I bring it or not? Pathetic question, but would be helpful to get your opinion as I could be filling up my bag with cool stuff instead! Cheers, Kimbo ![]() |

I've been thinking about the same thing (we're going end of Oct-mid Dec) and doing a pretty similar journey. I've pretty much decided not to take one, as we plan to stay in places where I'd expect not to need one (although i might take a cotton sleeping bag liner just in case!). I suppose it largely depends on the kind of places you envisage staying in - if you're going to hostels etc I'd have thought a sleeping bag would be essential.

We are going to take sleep sheets with us, so I'm hoping that may suffice.... I think we will be staying in cheap hotels rather than hostels.
I keep thinking if I don't bring it, I might be gutted when I get there! |

I never felt I needed one in December/January in Rajasthan, but was mostly staying in places costing Rs1000 - 1300. Getting away from the tourist areas to find a place that sells sleeping bags will turn out to be a lot more fun than you would think.

If you plan to be towards the southern part of India, a sleeping bag wouldn't really be necessary.... Just some woolens could do... Remember India is a pretty warm country.
If you're in the North, where it would definitely be snowing or freezing, then one could deffo do with a sleeping bag. Also, it depends if you are roughing it out or staying at one of the fancy and expensive places... Anyways I would like you to check it out and see... Fellow IM'ers pls advise... ![]() |

Having a sleeping bag definitely increases your options. If you plan to stick to the Sounthern parts of India, a sleeping bag will be too warm for comfort and will go unused. If you are planning to go on treks in the colder areas North of India, you will not regret carrying a sleeping bag. In India, if you are not trekking most of the time, you will spend a very small fraction of your time inside the sleeping bag

Just out of curiosity, does anyone know how much a lightweight compressible sleeping bag costs in India? Thanks!

Buy a nice blanket when you get there, It'll be far more versatile, You can sit on it, lay under it, or wrap it round you as a shawl,,,,,,,,,,,

As you say you are heading South from Delhi, I don't see any need for you to carry a sleeping bag. Your own sheet sleeping bag would be useful (buy or make) but even budget hotels will provide sheets, blankets or some form of bedding.

I actually used a cotton duvet cover which folded up into almost nothing and was light-weight too.
