I'll be in Sikkim in mid-April. It's not monsoon time, but you never know..... A trekker from Nepal suggested I take a light, foldable umbrella. I have a waterproof jacket, but an umbrella might be a good addition. I want to be sure I won't be deterred from walking around just because it's drizzling. Delhi will also be hot as hell and since I don't like hats, it could serve as a sunshade. Or would I look crazy??

Hi Mikki,
To reduce the weight of my luggage, I would prefer to buy one from Gantok itself. Good quality and cheap umbrls. are easily available there. But waterproof will give you an added advantage to keep your hands free (considering the photography). Best of luck. - Somnath |

You can always buy an umbrella there. Cheap chinese goods have flooded indian markets too. I am pretty sure it will be less expensive than buying one from Germany. Quite a few Indians use an umbrella in the sun.

They may ask 200+ for A light, foldable umbrella, but bargain to bring it as low as approx. Rs.100 - 120.

Hi!
I always suggest the large black gents umbrella for several reasons: You can use it as a walking stick, it is large enough to cover you and your backpack and helps in heavy downpour. You can shoo away dogs and use it as a weapon just in case! lastly, it also acts as a portable loo - when there is no rock/ tree to hide behind! ![]() |

Namaste Mikki,
I use umbrella in Himalyan areas for some years, for the rain (ligth one) as for the sun. and it's fine for a walk in town as for the trek (if not windy) I will be in Sikkim around 10th April, we may keep in touch if we need to form a group for trekking permit. I wrote the same at JPJ friendly Didiercev |
