Should I take a laptop to India?
Packing
I am going to take my ipad packed away in the middle of my main suitcase. And my ipod loaded with a couple of audiobooks in my hand luggage for listening to while waiting around at airports.
{from the moment I leave home I stop over at 3 airports before landing in Delhi}
Mike, I am going to spend some time browsing all your photos..
I hear my home country New Zealand is a good one for motorbike touring... you will have to come on over sometime.
Cheers, Vee

No selar, I took a small netbook last time in my cabin baggage and got sick and tired of dragging it out and putting in the tray and sending it through the xray machine through 3 airports coming and going each way. I am a person who likes to travel lightly and as easily as possible. It will save a lot of frustration for me if ipad is out of sight and out of mind til I arrive at my hotel. Ipod is a different matter.. it will hang around my neck!
Aw man... try slipping an Ipad into your glasses case hanging around your neck!!
I don't expect to lose my Ipad from out of the middle of my suitcase. And if by chance I was unlucky enough to lose the whole lot my insurance will cover it. I would be more worried about losing my clothes than my Ipad

How to be sure of waitlisted railway ticket getting confirmed as one`s not sure till 'chart' is prepared.
Although neoncarrot has made some really good points, I vote that you go without the laptop. A. I am sure there are plenty of internet cafes to access and make posts to friends, B. they are heavy and not easy to carry long distances, C. theft, and D. It might be a nice exercise to try living without all of the electronics we've become so addicted to in recent years.
Been there
and come back and so enjoyed at the end of each day being able to check on my ipad for news of my family and friends back home and to be able to share with them daily what I had been doing and seeing on my travels. I blog daily {my India trip on blog from 2nd Feb by the way} and I so enjoyed being able to put my thoughts there every evening.
Have to say the ipad is a lighter machine than the netbook I took year before.
I personally did not see internet cafes dotted around the countryside. But it seems most accommodation offers wi-fi.
Just my humble opinion.

Well, I suppose only you know how much you will be wanting to keep in contact with your family and friends via internet! Only you know if you will be happy managing without a laptop with you at all times. Personally, I can't live without internet contact with friends and family, I also need internet in a small way to keep an eye on our business while I am away. And I like to keep up with news from my home country via newspaper sites.
Nowadays it needn't even be a laptop. Smart phones with wi-fi access would probably do it. I took a netbook first time and an ipad this last time.
Some accommodation have a computer setup for clients use. You might be happy managing with that. I think most accommodation unless you are right out of the main centres would have wi-fi.
Cheers, Vee

I'm coming to India for a couple of months, spending six weeks in the same place so defo want my laptop. Totally forgot about my netbook which runs a little slow but will take everything off it and see if that helps.I want to get a sim over there also? Can you recommend what you got and how the signal was in areas of India? I will come with an unlocked phone, but at the same time if that doesn't work am happy to buy a phone and sim package. It does need to be pay as you go though.
