NO,,,,,,,,,,
Thers no real point in locking it. Like you say, If the authorities want to get in they'll break the locks anyway, If a theif wants to get in he'll either break the locks, slash the canvas or steal the whole bag. Just carry your main valubles with you and Trust the system. If you meet up with your bag in India yeah put a lock/chain on it If the situation needs, It won't stop anyone slashing it open but it will stop people just dipping in,,,,,,,,,,,, |

I once had some sweets in a side pocket which I did not lock but luckily had a proper lock for the main compartment of the bag. The flight was overbooked and my baggage got to India 2 days before me and was held in storage at Delhi. When I got the bag back my sweets were missing from the side pocket. OK it was not a major loss, but I for one was relieved that I had locks on the main compartment and the dirty thief did not bother with that compartment. |

Perhaps it's not true where you live, but in America (and India), you won't be allowed to check the bag unless it's unlocked.

I understand about the USA requirements but honestly on all my trips to and from India I always use locks. I have not had any problems in Holland with this as well. Is this some new rule that has come into force for Indian airports ? |

If travelling from US to India over Europe, they didn't let my friend board the flight (KLM) because he didn't have european visa (even though he had no plans of venturing out of airport). |

A good airport security friendly solution is to use plastic cable ties. If they need to get into the luggage, they just snip the cable ties. You can get a package cheaply that will last for you several trips (and maybe prompt organization at home). I used it on a trip and everything was fine. If you get the colored ones you would even be able to tell if your luggage had been opened. Most airport security can get into your locks with their universal keys and you would not even know.

Before Checkin, you have to unlock and after bomb detection clearance you can lock it again. For domestic in USA they wont allow you to lock in. For international, flying by Malaysian or Singapore Air, they dont question that, unless you have bomb making materials or bombs itself in your luggage. In that case you will not be flying, you will be with TSA detained for questioning without access to attorney. So dont worry lock it. It is safe. Otherwise, when the luggage arrives in india, there is a possibility some people open it and take any thing (even toothpaste and shave cream) believe me it happened to me. Thanks |

What about these new fangled "TSA-approved" locks they have now? I went to buy luggage locks for use in hotels and rails, and every one I looked at, even the combination ones had a keyhole at the bottom of the lock so U.S. security people could unlock it if they wanted/needed to.
Should I just get one of those? I'm kind of wary about other people who are not TSA having those keys. |

Lock your bags, or as suggested in an earlier post use cable ties. or even both....Much safer.
I have travelled all over europe and to India several times using both international and domestic flights, I always put locks on my baggage. No problems |

Ok, yeah, I get that, but I am asking about these new locks that anyone can open if they have the TSA key.
Let me give a link example: http://www.tsa.gov/travelers/airtrav...ant/locks.shtm |

If you use a cable tie as well, you should know if you bag has been opened, It is easy for the authorities or anyone else to remove the cable tie but not so easy for them to replace it. whereas with the new locks you mention it would be hard for you to notice.
