i like to go through obsessions...

im totally lost.
i leave in two weeks (the 24th) and i still have no idea what im doing for shoes. my itinerary is kind of vast.. because i will be spending three months in ladakh and one month in the south so i need a range of clothing, right? i know im taking flip flops.. for the shower. but i dont want to take both hiking boots AND sandals (tevas, or something of the like) i mean, thats just excessive and heavy! i figured i could just buy them when im up there (in Ladakh) and leave 'em there.. but seeing as how the shoes need to be well broken in.. any recommendations on maybe closed (toe and heel) shoes that would be suitable for trekking but also not stuffy for hot weather? meep. help! please!! s'panks. ![]()

monsoon
well there is monsoon in the summer so if you are going anywhere where it will be raining a lot, you might want to wear shoes that are 'appropriate' for the rain, as I have heard that in places like Mumbai, in the monsoon, people's shoes get ruined.

Maybe give the hiking boots option another thought, the weight will compensate for the protection you may need.

If I go to the Taj and it is raining, am I expected to walk around in the rain with no shoes? Can I at least use slippers or something?

If you are going to trek : start breaking in your boots now ! This is the one thing you shouldnt try to save weight on - it can , literally, become a painful experience.

I personally feel US is the place to buy shoes. I got a spalding hunting boots for 15$ in calif (just 700 Rs!!). It is the very best shoe for what you have in mind. It is got thick hard soles but the shoe is pretty light. It is slightly 'taller' than normal shoes but not one of those ankle boots. I have walked on snow for days and not had any frost bites. When you step over small puddles, seldom water goes in.

personally if I was going somewhere Im gonne be trekking or whatever I would probably be happy with something like Nike (air mada?) some sneaker like that, but then if you think you will be facing bushes with snakes and or snow, you will need hiking boots maybe. It all depends. Some people go to the north and sit in a chaishop all day.

Instead of hiking boots, how about trail runners? You could leave your sneakers at home. Try the Dunham Waffle Stompers or Trail Mix. Definitley buy them and put 20+ miles on them before you leave. Hiking shoes are not one of those things where cheaper is better.

I carry boots, tevas and flip flops. My boots are pretty light...my pack never feels any different when I'm wearing my boots. Lots of people trek in trainers but they don't give me enough ankle support.
