shoes for wedding - request for advice

I understand that wedding attire (for non-family) is quite casual, but what kinds of shoes would be inacceptable (for a guy)?

I have an old, comfortable pair of athletic shoes that I was thinking of using on the trip but they are not the kinds of shoes I would feel comfortable wearing to a Western wedding.

I'm not sure what I'll be wearing -- probably cotton trousers and a button down shirt (or a local Indian-style shirt). I suppose I could buy sandals but it's not something I would feel very comfortable wearing at a formal event. My wife plans to wear a saree (even though she's never worn one before).

The wedding will be a Christian wedding in Kerala, btw.

Thanks.

Formal Black/Brown leather shoes will look good for the occasion.

Avoid sandals or athletic shoes !

Button shirt!

My opinion - Definately the button down shirt! Unless you are Indian, the Indian shirt would not be appropriate, I think. i was married in india myself (Hindu ceremony) in bombay, juhu area. I was the only non indian in attendance! I'm guessing that a christian (you did say christian?)wedding might be more formal than a Hindu wedding, but i don't know how they do things in Kerela. In my experience, women are "dressed to kill" for any occaision, saris, tons of gold, but the men just wear semi casual, no ties, but go for the formal shoes. However, if you don't want to pack them, or you really want to wear an Indian shirt, as a non indian you will be given plenty of leeway and not expected to know whats correct. Indians are very forgiving if you don't quite get the ettiquit & dress right, so have fun!

Thanks for your replies.

Can shoes be purchased cheaply in India? I mean formal shoes that can be used and "donated" after a few days? I hate to lug an extra pair of shoes around if I don't have to.

Yes, formal shoes can be easily purchased in India- the price range is vast. Bata's are recommended.
