shoes for D.sala/houses for rent

If you were going to D.sala for a year, and could bring 2 pairs of shoes, what would you bring? Does it snow enough to require boots? Not planning on doing much strenuous hiking but want to have something that covers all conditions.

Also- what is the story with rental houses in upper d.sala/mcload ganj? Ive heard you can rent from loacal families- what is the usual rent and condition of these places? And do most have heat?

Sorry for the divergent nature of the questions.

Boots I would bring. In the winter months Mcleod is just a slushy muddy mess and the roads are even worse. You will be slipping and sliding down the roads without them.

Hard to suggest a type but whatever your favorite is.

Rental places vary and it's just a "ask around" kind of thing. Prices would vary depending on the quality of what you are looking for. Anywhere from 50 rupees a day for a bed and bath to a few hundred rupees a day for something with hot shower and a kitchen. Bhagsu up the way has better accommodations and you can rent a house or part of a house. Around the same prices.

Heat is extra and when I stay during the winter I buy my own heater, there are different types ranging from plug in heaters to gas powered heaters, the latter being the most expensive. Make sure though if you are using an electric heater to tell the owner, odds are his electric bill will skyrocket from the extra expense and he may want a few rupees more a day for you using it. If you don't tell him there may be a knocking on the door when the first electric bill comes in.
A gas heater is quite a bit more exspensive.

Electric ones are okay when there is power. Don't say I didn't warn you, first rain drop or snowflake falls and it's lights out.

Hope this helps some
Mike
