Shoes again!
Alright, I know this is not very original and there are already many posts on this subject (which I have read), but can anybody tell me...
DO I NEED 2 TAKE WALKING SHOES? The problem is that i don't really have a definite plan of where i am going or what i am going 2 b doing while I am in India. I think we will be heading up towards Leh at some point and I am considering maybe doing some voluntary teaching in Mcleod Ganj. We will be travelling in August and if I stay on (as I hope to) then I could be in Mcleod Ganj during September/October. Obviously I don't want 2 carry anything that is not absolutely necessary, but if the experienced and helpful Indiamikers think I should take some, then who am I 2 argue? |

my plan so far
My plan so far is 2 take my Merrel sandals 4 walking, flip flops for slobbing about in at hotels and a v light pair of slightly dressier sandals for going out. Just can't decide on the walking shoes issue. Dont wanna get cold tootsies up in the hills but also dont wanna carry them if i dont need 2.

Don't bother with the 'dressier sandals'; just wear you Merrel sandals that you are comfortable in all day and every day. Don't take flipflops: buy them there (very, very cheap) if you decide you need them.

I like Tevas (or Merrells or whatever) - just chuck a pair of socks on with them if it's a bit chilly.
Once you're over there, you can pick up a pair of fancy jooti cheaply - they pack well and look pretty cool in my opinion. I still wear them at home with jeans all the time ![]() |

Trekking shoes of the European quality are not available here. They are reqd if you are going for a serious trek. For some three day walk, buy local shoes from anywhere, there are plenty to choose from.... Just wear an extra pair of sox so that your feet don't get blistered by the new shoes. Maybe get the fitment right by wearing the extra pair o'sox at the shoe store.
