sending package to India

My son is spending several months in Kalimpong and has asked that I send him a number of items, mostly as gifts to his host family: guitar strings, nalgene bottle, some glucosamine tablets
(over the counter) for his host mom, etc, total value about $40.

So I've packed up a small box, and I'm wondering what the chances are that it will arrive, and whether it's going to be held at Customs or the Post office when it does.
(Regular letter mail is delivered to the program house in Kalimpong).

Any tips would be appreciated!

I have sent many packages using USPS, it takes around 10 to 15 days to reach India. You should fill out a customs form and declare all items in the box and indicate it is a gift.

No matter how you send it, you have to declare the contents and have it processed by customs. If you send it regular mail (air or surface), it will take a long time. A better, though more expensive, option is DHL, which is more reliable and faster.
