Question sending money to India

I wish to send an amount of money (£100) to a family we know in India. We have sent money on a previous occasion through our bank but had to pay a very sizeable charge. I did investigate various ways of sending money but most of the banks/financial companies that offer this service could only deal with specific banks - thos family have an account at a small branch of the State bank of India. Any advice would be appreciated!

Also, are there any rules/restrictions on sending food parcels to India?

Unless the amount is urgently needed, mail them a cheque in the post. Even a small branch will credit it with 3 weeks or so, and the charges will not be large. Usual transfers will be expensive for this amount.

Btw, I have deposited similar small amounts folks abroad send the kids sometimes on birthdays etc, with no problems... with a small branch of state bank of india, albeit in a big city. But I don't foresee any problems, except the time involved.

Or Western Union? They are everywhere today, even some banks and post offices (I am told) have a tie up with them.

Btw, at the bottom of this page, you will find, under "Similar threads", quite a few with the same title.
Hope they have useful information.

Rules for Food parcels, no idea. But they may get tampered with anyway along the way.

Have you tried at the Post Office? My mum's local post office person told her there's some way of transferring money to a local post office in India, if you know its address. Maybe he meant Western Union?

ICICI bank do some kind of money thing online that allows you to transfer to other Indian banks, but you might have to be an NRI to use it, I'm not sure. Plus I don't know if the State Bank is represented. Details here:

The only other way I can think of would be if the family have a friend or relative they trust, with an account that's more accessible- e.g. the Bank of Baroda have UK branches where you could just pay straight in.

Good luck.

Any Indian grocery in your country has a local Indian newspaper with ads for private money transfers. My choice because checks and Western Union involve cost and hassle..
