Hi
Actually I send out on a daily basis as I started my own company in Bangalore. It i svery cheap and secure if you use teh right courier company. Try couriers like Safex, DHL or Fedex. Safex are the ones I use and they are really cheap. most items arrive within 3 days and are signed for at the other end. Cheaper than sending out by first class post in the UK. |

There's always the postal service. and post offices are all over the place, easier to find than couriers.

Sending Boxes Within India
To "BritInDel09"
Thanks, I will check out DHL - the only courier here in Almora. Do you know if they hold boxes for pickup at their offices, or do they deliver to one's address? Important for me since I am relocating to TN, I won't have an address for awhile. Jyoti |

Sending Boxes Within India
Another question ----
Has anyone had to deal with sending extra baggage (or boxes) on Indian Rail? I am taking the train from Delhi>Chennai so wondering if sending my extra boxes (household things) in baggage would be a viable option - is there the usual needless run around and red tape? Does one arrive for their train with everything in tow, or does the extra baggage have to be delivered to the train station much much earlier than when the train leaves? Thanks Jyoti |

Luggage & Parcel office at Ajmeri Gate side is open from 10am to 5pm (Weekdays) so you have to book the luggage first. They book it on your ticket & load it to train in which you are travelling. If you send me the details/ Sizes of boxes & your exact journey date, I can tell you the exact expanse & procedure. 'coz I know some people there.

At Ajmeri Gate Parcel Office, Business is very organised. There are agents (not railway Employees) who charge their handling fee and do everything for you.
You handover goods they pack it in front of you and take all responsibilities till loading in the train. They will give you RR. It's so amooth, you'll wonder whether they are railway employees.....

Boxes, etc.
Dear Pathankot and DeliWala -

To Pathankot:
as a side note, I booked my train reservations (2 in 1st class, Radhjani) on Cleartrip.com. but I am also taking my little dog (5 KG) so I need to make a request for a 2 berth cabin. (Dogs are only allowed in 1st class) There was no entry field for this on their online form. Do you know where, and when, and how I need to book my dog? And how I can guarantee a 2 berth cabin for my adult son and myself? From other threads on IM I have learned that the berths are not assigned until 4 hours before the train departs, but that if the train officials know there is a dog, they will assign a 2 berth. I don't want to get into a 4 berth and have a passenger complain about not wanting a dog in the cabin - then the dog will be taken to the baggage car, or I will have to get off the train with no refund. I will be very appreciative for any info you have. Also, I will arrive to Delhi on 20 Oct late in the afternoon (from Uttarkhand) - should I plan on an extra day to take care of all this and arrive on 19 Oct instead? Thanks so much Jyoti |

I would absolutely love to know of a way to send packages from the US to Bharuch, Gujarat, without them getting stuck in customs. From what I understand, someone would have to travel from Bharuch to Mumbai to retrieve the package, and depending on the contents, could end up paying triple of what the item is worth in tax. Is this correct?
I enjoy sending beauty products and purses to my MIL and her sisters but the only way I have been able to send them so far is if someone is already traveling to India and willing to take it with them to send out by courier once at their destination. This seems to be the only way unless there is some sort of secret delivery system I don't know about. |

I think that might be called smuggling!
![]() So far, the few packages I have received from outside India have not been unduly delayed, or charged duty. One package I sent to UK was inspected by British customs and delayed over a month. |

Ah... smuggling. Not a route I necessarily want to go.
I wonder if there's some sort of service that can arrange for small packages to be sent with people traveling to India to courier out upon their arrival. I'm sure the service would be costly, but she just treasures so many of the things I send her it would be worth it for me. We both adore purses so it's way for us to bond even though we can't communicate (yet.) |

I received another package last week: an electronic circuit board, replacement part for a washing machine.
Less than two weeks from UK warehouse to Chennai home, no customs hold up. You are expecting problems that, mostly (unless you start sending our LCD TVs!) will not happen. Just use the post. |
