Question Secure storage

I'm going out to India in a few weeks for about 7 weeks, then going to Nepal to do a climbing expedition. As such I have oddles of climbing gear that I need to store in India (rather than haul alround the country). Ist there anywhere good, cheap and secure that I can store a large rucksack and uncompressed sleeping bag? I've thought of left luggage at the airport or train station, are these good? Secure? Costly? Any other suggestions?

Many thanks,

Peat

Left luggage at train stations is normally good and cheap, they don't usually do extended storage though as far as I know, it's just handy if you want to explore a city for a day or two. Many guesthouses (you're landing in Delhi right?) will store luggage just for your purposes, it's not very expensive I think, I've helped a friend arrange it once (you don't necessarily have to stay at the place). Needless to say use a place you're comfortable with, don't leave any valuables and get an itemized receipt.

What is the case like in Mumbai? I am not aware of any guesthouses...would I be able to store my luggage at a 'hotel' (Indian def'n of hotel) without staying at the place? Any idea on costs? thanks

I don't know about the situation in Mumbai, you'd think it can be done anywhere but it might not be as common. In Delhi people are used to it because of all the trekkers, Mumbai would be different.

The costs used to be a couple of rupees per piece per day, I've read here it's still like that. Note that the Indian definition of "hotel" means a restaurant so don't head there Well maybe if you've befriended the owners it's not even a bad idea... Anyway in the above "guesthouse" referred to any ol' place to sleep.
