Err ... It would help if you told us which part of India you are planning to visit!

Someone better educated may correct me (please?) but I think it is a matter of latitude: the closer to the equator you get the more intense the sun, even in 'winter'.

I'd say if you like to wear sunglasses, just bring them.

Nick,

Not totally true, other factors come into it, latitude, altitude, weather, etc.

If you are in snow then you may/will need sunglasses.

Yep, thats essentially correct, for ultraviolet radiation. But its a few degrees either side of the equator, so most of Southern India would be in this belt.

Also depends on altitude. IIRC, at 9000 feet, UV is 40% more than sea level

And it is max between 10am and 3 pm

I should have said, all other things being equal

Thanks, both, for the information.

Snow is very hard on the eyes, in any latitude, as is the sun reflecting off wavelets when sailing.

It would also depend on the person. I generally always need sunglasses unless it's foggy grey midwinter in the Northeast and dark by 4:30. Others only ever wear them as a fashion statement.

Oh, and by the way, Nick, I ended up finding a pair at the neighborhood vintage clothing store - they keep all sorts of accessories, year round.

I have to confess I stopped wearing sunglasses a few years back. I have prescription ones but I just prefer my more lightweight plastic lens normal spectacles especially in the heat. There seems to be this dust haze in the air at all times and the light isn't nearly anywhere as intense as back in NZ or Oz. I find the sun doesn't bother me at all here - and I have travelled much of North India. The pollution in Delhi is enough for you to take your sunglasses off so you can see!! Unless you're going to snow country or sailing out on the water then I think you can manage without them; but it's an entirely personal decision and up to you.

UV goes through the haze, apparently.

But I only wear sunglasses for driving.

Opopp' --- what were you doing in a vintage clothing store?

If you will be taking Doxycycline for anti-malarai, do note that it makes you more sensitive to the sun, and you may very well want sunglasses.

And even in winter, the sun does shine in Northern India...

I even need them in winter in Holland, when it's a sunny, or even not so sunny, day (sensitive girl, errr, mean eyes ;-) ). So always bring a pair or two to India.

Enjoy!
