Laptop and ipod run on anything from 90V to 240V. the plug adapters (not voltage converters) are all you need and you will find them much cheaper in India, or Radio shack if you want to avoid the hassle of looking for it in India.

I have another converter /adapter question. I already bought a 50 watt voltage converter and a three pronged plug adapter in the US for India. The guy at the store told me these would be necessary for India but I'm not sure now if I need both. Does anyone have any suggestions? I mainly want to charge an ipod and cannon digital camera battery.
Many thanks,
Amanda

Hi agoodwin, welcome to Indiamike,

As crvlvr mentioned, you will not require this for the iPod and you can check in your camera's manual to see if it will be required to charge your battery -- if it is 120-240v, then all you will need is a plug adaptor which is available in India pretty well in any shop that sells electrical stuff for around 15 rupees. If it only works with 120v, then you will need the converter that you have already bought. If both devices are dual voltage, then do not bother bringing the converter as it is a waste of space and it's use not recommended.

Thanks a lot m2, I just picked up my backpack for the first time yesterday and it is enormously heavy. I need to jettison any and all unnecessary things like this power converter before I go!

Thanks for the suggestion, vistet, do you know if I can get one of those in India? The only surge protector that I know of here in the US is one of those cumbersome powerstrip/surge protectors that are heavy and big. Can you get a surge protector for one outlet?

I have an 4-socket surge protector bought in India. it has a fuse. it is not much bigger than the normal 4-way. But I use a small APC UPS which includes this function.

You might be interested in something like this .
Belkin are bound to make something that's the right size for almost anyone!

Belkin MasterCube

The Belkin MasterCube is the simplest surge protector about, it does the phone line as well and you can plug a multi board into it if you want.

Ok just to clarify...to recharge and protect my ipod in India do I just need a plug adapter and the Belkin Master cube? The ipod charger connects to the Master cube which connects to the plug adapter that is plugged into the wall socket??? Ok now I'm starting to sing it.
I'm amazed at what I am finding out here, thankyou so much everybody..... we leave in two weeks and I've been obsessively reading India mike evvery night. Balini
