I've had only unregistered post disappear. Registered ones always arrives, that's why this is how I send everything including letters that are somehow important.

But I'm scared for my new Visa card. My bank has refused to send it registered ... But as they send it before the validity starts I guess it'll be ok.

Woops, sorry: reversal of topic

You have to first do the change-of-address thing, then they'll do it.

Nope. They told me to give an address in UK or they would close the account. Don't care; I can get an international credit card in India now, if I need one...

This the only difficult part about bookpost : getting it sewn up properly, with the inspection slit that makes it possible to see the books , and still makes it stable . And yes , you´ll still need a string around it. I have taken a few pre-unboxing pics that are ... somewhere around here , next time I´ll bring it with me to eliminate misunderstandings.

Never had any probs with bookpost , I also use Vedams bookstore now and then : always arrives seventh or eight day after ordering.

Postage calculator

Does anyone know how to figure out about the actual postage costs? I have had a look on the site of Indiapost, but the information there seems to be a bit fuzzy. E.g. for a parcel 200g "surface air lifted" the postage calculator comes up with 170 rupies, the table on the page about SAL states 665 rupies.
As I have to juggle wuite a bit with customs and postage, I would be glad, if I had a reliable source of information about the postage.

Hi,
I have had a couple of packages delivered safely and within 3 weeks - undisturbed too. However it is not the same for a parcel which I am trying to locate through India Post by email and directly by phone.

This parcel was returned from Ireland with an unreadable address on 07 Feb. I have found out that it was sent back to Delhi.
That is where the trail gets difficult. I have called about fifty different numbers in Delhi GPO but nobody seems to know anything about it - even though I have the Irish and the Indian tracking numbers.

Does anybody here in IM know of a phone number within India Post Head Office where such undeliverables are gathered? I would be very grateful for any help.
I am ever hopeful that it wil turn up.

thanks in advance

Angry Sending by seamail -- my story

I bought a set of tabla and a harmonium from Bina Music in Delhi, and paid them to ship them to my home in Los Angeles. I opted for sea mail thinking it was cheaper, but it's turning out to be a very expensive lesson for me.

Even though I paid Bina 7000R (about US$163)to ship the articles, I just received a faxed invoice from a shipping company demanding another $284 for various port charges. Then I was told I will have to find a Customs agent to clear my shipment so I can take it home, the fee for that likely being around US$100. I can't believe what hassle and a rip-off this has turned out to be. I kick myself for being so naive in thinking it'd be so simple, but I had talked to other people who had shipped items home and they had no problems.

I'm sharing this not to complain, but to advise people to pay the extra money for airmail, and go with a courier service such as DHL when shipping packages home from India.

My advice: Stick to FedEx, UPS, DHL or BlueDart. I sent a some papers through EMS Speed-Post to the UK from an Indian post-office - the speed post took over a month to reach. It's cheap, but highly unreliable.

Prices

All price information that I found so far about FedEx or UPS showed incredibly high prices compared to the indian post. Was I blind not finding the right information, or do you really think it makes sense to post a 5 kg-package for 100 EUR?

Yes, I know that I can send via airmail oder sea or sea lifted air, that I can send unregistered, registered or insured, and that there are parcels, Packages and letters. That's the easy part.
But I would really appreciate a link to a table with the charges. Could anyone provide more detailed information? That would be really great. Thanks.

I know someone who was running an internet company out of India. He reported that the post office was fine. I trust him!

I digged myself quite z lot through Indiamike, and I did not find a single entry (although there might be a few) stating that a registerded package got lost, so that I am quite optimistic about using their service.
Nevertheless, the customs might be handling DHL-Packages faster and easier than those from the Indian Post.
