post restante

Has anyone used the post restante service in India? Specifically Delhi. Basically, its where someone posts you stuff, addressed to (for example) 'General Post Office, Delhi' and its held at the post office until you pick it up.

Basically I'm planning on travelling in India around Feb-April/May. Then I'm heading up into Tibet, where I need cold weather gear and decent walking boots. Don't want to lug all this stuff around India, so thinking I'll get my Mum to post it out to me.

Have heard rumours that letters are ok, but when it comes to parcels, the chances of you getting the parcel are doubtful. I'd most probably be posting some relatively pricey stuff, and don't want to loose it!

So if anyone has used it, I'd be grateful for feedback. Or if you've any other bright ideas as to other ways to figure this!

Thanks!

I would say that's probably a bad idea, parcels do get tampered with using India Post and leaving it at a restante address would seem a a bit dangerous to me!!

Im wouldn't use the 'Poste restante' service for anything more than a letter, they do have a to sign for recorded service but,,,,,,,,,,,,

Alternatives would be to carry your gear or some of it with you to India & check into leaving it with your hotel people with the knowledge for you & them that you'll be back in a month or so, Or check it into the Left Luggage at the Train Station ( don't know the max time on this) Or purchase all, or whatever you didn't take with you in Kathmandu or wherever,,,,,,,,,

In some places (certainly Kathmandu was like this in the 80s) the Poste Restante service is a box in a public area, where anyone can rifle through the mail. Things may have changed, but you didn't need to prove your identity, you just rummaged through to find what was yours.
