Poncho- necessary or useless

I'm traveling to India for two months (June - August) and am quite aware it will rain a lot. Should I bring a poncho or just wear swimming trunks and t-shirt during the heavy rains? Thanks for the help.

A poncho sounds like a good idea to me, as long as it is made of a light and preferably breathable material.

The trouble with a poncho is what to do with it when you take it off. They take up much more room and are harder to dry than a lightweight rain jacket, which can be hung on a chairback or hook. It's the shape I don't like even though it works great and is light and packs small. I've given up on my rain poncho. Besides, if you are stuck in a monsoon deluge, as you could be in the summer, nothing really helps but waiting it out. The streets get flooded, it's impossible, everyone just runs for cover and waits. Then the sun comes out until the next deluge! I like a collapsable umbrella but they useless in a storm. T-shirt and nylon shorts are good!

It depends if it's a Sears poncho or a real Mexican poncho (obscure Frank Zappa reference). Seriously, buy a cheap umbrella when you get there and leave the poncho at home. It's a fashion faux pas anyway

You can buy a rainproof ultralightweight poncho that folds down into its own pocket and has with pit zips (for ventillation), called a PACKA. It's amazing and it even has room to cover a backpack/daypack, which is really handy because then then rain doesn't soak the straps and run down your back. It's like a one-man operation and the guy has really covered all the bases in creating something that works well. I love it. I used it throughout my AT thruhike and I take it with me when travelling all the time, now.
