ummm...at the risk of posting something which I have no idea about( the sizes you mentioned)....

Whereever you shop, the shops will recommend(& you can ask for) a tailor to fit the material for you. If it's the innerwear stuff, I have no clue.

Dont worry, it will be a blast. I lived in Bangalore but I have been in Chennai for 2 years. Am about your size and I never had any problems shopping.

One shop I liked was Mustard in the Forum mall. A specifically plus sized clothing store. Last I checked Westside - another chain store has started a line for plus sized women. It was called Gia or something like that and you get everything from formals to casuals to undies.

Tailors, just go to commercial street and ask any local and she/he will point you to his fav. I lived in Koramangala and though I dont have the address for her, I can write down directions if you are interested.

Just a quick update on this thread as I found it useful before coming to India:

When I was in Delhi I went looking for the "Just my size" store in the Greater Kailash 1 (GK1) market but did not find it...suspect it may be closed?

There was a "Revolution" branch in the GK1 market but it had mostly western clothes.

However FabIndia recently started a line of plus sized clothing that fit folk upto size 22. Not much selection though.

I do not know if this has already been mentioned in this thread:
future group(the Big bazaar chain of markets\Hyderabad central\Bangalore central\Pune central\any of the pantaloons),have a flag-ship brand called "aLL" for plus-size clothes.
Their stores should have them.

These are their online sales points:

And i don't have prior experience shopping online with these guys,so no assurances.

Just my size is difficult to find..its located in a residential type building outside the market...I went there few months back and it bears a deserted look. The selection in something as basic as pair of jeans was limited to 1 or 2 and quality was not that good. The prices were very steep when I compare to the quality they were providing.

However there is a store in Karol Bagh that goes by name of Klick, their quality is not good, however they do have plus and super plus sizes as well. Their rates are very reasonable as they are not marketed as Revolution OR just my size OR any other plus size store. For them its a normal size and product. Its owned by Sikh and they can be very large...as per Indian standards...

So - I'm a 14-16 and big chested, I was thinking those nice cool cotton men's pull-on shirts with the buttons would be nice, but I def want some SKs

I was wondering - with the tailors - do you need to have something for them to copy ? Or can you describe what you want...or draw a picture or something?

I took something with me to have copied: a simple shirt with a round neck, big enough to pull over without needing buttons. The tailor (in Puri) borrowed it for overnight and had a pattern made, and then stitched three of them, with ordinary salwars, for a pretty low price. They didn't come out exactly like the shirt I'd brought, but close enough and I was very comfortable in them.

One does not necessarily need to give tailors a sample, its always better i guess but not compulsory. I am not a large guy, but i still prefer to tailor all my suits, instead of getting off the shelf items, and have managed without samples.

A sample is nice and is the easiest way to go but its not vital. The tailor can measure you on the spot but sometimes they don't put enough ease in the finished garment and the item can end up a shade too tight. So make sure you tell them how close a fit you want.

You should not expect your tailor to have imagination.

He spends his day stitching salwar suits and sari blouses. Even (if my wife's experience is to be gone by) being asked for a different cut or style of blouse can be quite a challenge.

Every locality has its local tailors, but if you want something non-standard (non-Indian?) it may be better to go to a fashionable, expensive area, and a sample would be a good idea.

Consider the women on the street --- the fantastic variety is in the colours, the fabrics. Apart from those dressed in "western" clothes, and apart from a little variety in the cut of a salwar kameez, there is little variety at all what they are wearing.

But if I just want an SK - but with say 'this' shape pant leg, or this length sleeve - then should be no problem to describe it?

And depending on where you are ...

In Mahabalipuram, I asked for a choli and got a blouse that was loose fitting and came to my waist, instead of the tight, midriff-baring choli I wanted.

Depends on where you are, and who you can point to for an example.... or how well you can draw it. But they don't always follow your instructions, as "foreigners don't really know what is appropriate."
