Depends on what you want to plug in and where you are coming from. India runs on the 220-240 volt system.

The converter you need is the three pronged one with rounded prongs (if that makes any sense!).

Well, not of any use to the original poster, but to add a bit to tracey and Rockers.

If you are thinking of taking a small electrical appliance like a cordless razor or something using a built-in charger, check to see if it is 110-220V 50-60 cycles or 220v. If so, you will be fine -- a two or 3 pin plug will work (the third is the ground, I guess) If you are coming from NA and have a 2 blade type plug, but can use 220-240 V, then you can buy a simple adapter in pretty well any electrical shop (only 10-15 rupees). If your appliance is 110-120 v only, then you will need a more sophisticated converter or inverter or whatever it is called, that can step the 220v down to 110. No experience with these, but if you require one of these for something expensive like a camera or computer, then consider bringing one from home as the quality of a lot of Indian electrical goods is not always the best (and I'm being charitable with that description).

thank you mike that was very helpful.
i've got a couple more questions from reading other postings on the plug/adapter issue...

someone mentioned that the adapters found in NA (walmart) are 'surge protectors' but do not 'convert voltage'?? do i need to convert the voltage?

and in another posting a 'spikebuster' was suggested? is that necessary if i don't want to fry my equiptment?

i need power for a digtal video camera and battery charger. will an adapter from radio shack/rei (walmart) do the job and protect my equiptment?
