Plug Adaptor UK to India
I've been into Blacks camping shops and the only ones I could find said they were suitable in some parts of India. Does anyone know where I can get one that works all over India? Or do they have different plug sockets in different areas of India? Do I need a voltage converter aswell?
Thanks |

India is 230V, 50Hz (that is what they claim). There are no different systems at different parts in india. If it is only the plug (not the voltage) compatiability problem, just buy an adaptor at a local 'electrical shop' in india. Most of the city shops here have it.

In regards to mossie spray, I just talked to my doc about it yesterday and he recommended anything with 30% deet. anything more could be potentially harmful and anything less could be ineffective.

Peaky, are you old enough to remember the round-pin plug system that Britain used to use till (not sure...) 1960ish?
Most plugs/sockets in India (limited experience: I only know the South) are the 3amp plugs of the old British system. I have a couple of adapters made from such a plug with a piece of wire and a 13-amp square-pin socket on the end. Travel adapters bought here just don't work: I've tried several. Have a dig in you/your parent's/your grandparent's/ shed, if they have any old 3-amp plugs you can make your own adapter. Or, as recommended, buy localy.

World Travel Adapters bought here in the uk are very good these days, they're very compact and cover evrywhere including India.
I bought one this year in a duty free whsmiths, cost about a 5er. Theres also a european one, but it says on the packaging. |

70s, I find that they do no better than make a very loose fit in Indian plugs. You obviously get on better with them than I do

Mossie spray - depends where you live. If you know an Australian, get them to send you a bottle of 'Rid' - its much nicer than anything in the UK, and really works. One of the big problems with that gunk containing deet - ie Jungle Formula etc is that it uses a base that is like white spirit or alcohol - what this means is that when you have it on, you will stick to everything plastic that you touch !!
Re plugs - if you get fed up with weight in your bag, and hate carrying an adaptor, why not go to an electrical shop when you get to India and have them put a local plug on it ?? Tim |

Mozzie spray we took Aero guard from Oz it worked great we used the plug in ones for the rooms with the paper tabs and never got bit, we only went into one room that was already bad with the buggers and we asked the owner for a spay which they did and they went. we found most hotels put in an electrical zapper all of these items can be bought cheaper that chips in India ( laugh) thats a Goan quote from Indian stall holders, the poms have a lot to answer for in Goa.

I just got a 4-way adapter in a local [Chennai] electrical shop. It will take all sorts of plugs, including UK.

A good alternative is to buy an extension leads and then just take the UK plug off and fit an Indian one.
Sometimes you can buy these for £1 in Poundland |
