Packing: travel light!
Carry your documents on a pen drive. You can also put Lonely Planet on your pen drive in pdf form, find an Internet Cafe and print off the pages you need. This enables you to mark the pages, highlight or make notes, then dispose when you have finished with them.

Granted, a couple of plastic bags may add a few grams, however it's most handy to keep your stuff in some semblance of order, and if any sort of rain breaks out, to keep it dry
*(Seriously, I've yet to travel in any sort of real monsoon, but it's said to keep your stuff from going mouldy at that time can be quite the hassle in itself. I have however and in any case had it wet enough to be happy to have my stuff in some plastic.)
* And at least I carry a large shoulder bag; backpacks are notorious of course for you filling them top-down, and so never being able to find anything back, or having to dig it up from bottom. Either way, I don't mind having some idea of Oh here are my shirts, here my undies, etc. Quite handy, indeed, too, if you have to retrieve something in a jiffy on a bus or train ride or so. Where did that notebook go, my woollen hat, those hankies, that book I suddenly felt like having a look at, etc.
But, to each their own, as always

I always carry my stuff in separate dry-sacks, as well as keeping stuff dry the different size or colour sacks let me know which bag to dig into. Also having 2 sets of documents helps in case of severe wet conditions. my passport is always kept as dry as possible. Monsoon conditions can be more severe than you can imagine so think really dry.....

We are talking grams, no more, but much easier if you need a certain item. if you can remember how you pack. It can also add to your security if you are switched on......
Try it, it works.....

a great POST! I WOULD ADD ONE DOOR STOP (SECURITY INSIDE HOTEL ROOM)4 SAFETY PINS 1 METER (3 FEET) OF HEAVY DUTY TWINE SMALL ROLL OF BROWN
STICKY TAPE 1 DECK OF CARDS 6 RUBBER BANDS ASSORTED SIZES 1 PADLOCK
I love this. Wondering if I should even attempt a feminine version of this . .. .
I support the addition of padlocks, and safety pins and would add an alarm clock (if you don't wear one of those fancy watches).
I'd toss back in the travel sewing kit.
Thanks and cheers,
A

Welcome to IndiaMike, spook!
My thoughts on your friend's idea is that it would depend on how much time you have in India. If you are there a short time, you would be spending valuable vacation time running to different stores trying to find different things that you already have at home and could have just brought with you. If you are spending a lot of time in India, then I think it might be OK if you want to buy everything you need when you are there. Those are just my thoughts on it.
