Packing suggestions for a family with small kids
Hi
We will arrive in India in Sept. for 4-6 months with small kids. We will be in Dharamsala as well as the South. I would love advice regarding packing tips. I last traveled India alone and now with kids, I just want to make sure I cover all bases.
many thanks...

well its kinda hard to list down things without knowing the ages of your children but general stuff would include:
- medicines
- insect repellent
- a couple of full sleeves tshirts and cotton trousers for protection from mosquitoes
- sunscreen
- caps/hats
- some special food stuff that they like and can be carried easily
rest really would depened on how old they are!

Hi - there is very little that you will need that you cannot get in India - clothes, medicine, diapers/forumla, even foods that they may be used to, etc. Doctors are readily available for any antibiotics or anything requiring a prescrption. Do check with your own doctor about shots/malaria meds that they might need before the trip. Some are not appropriate for very young children.
Bring something familiar - a blanket, special toy. I'd recommend closed toed shoes instead of sandals.
If traveling with very young children you will likely find it is difficult to use a stroller in most places, cribs/high chairs are rarely available, etc. Even finding a place to change a diaper becomes a challenge.
Use antiseptic handwash frequently and watch what they touch and where they walk. Give them only "safe" foods (cooked or something that can be peeled). Don't lose sight of them in crowded places. Take more precautions for them than you would for yourself.
You can expect a lot of attention as well. :-) Enjoy!

I agree with Pani puri.
Everything is available here except probably their fav toys etc.
You really don't need to bring handwash/mosquito repellent cream/gel. It's available off the shelf.
Dharamsala will be cold while south India will be hot. Choose clothes accordingly. More than physical, I think your kids will find it difficult emotionally.
They should expect
1) a lot of stares, smiles
2) Pulling of cheek
3) Cameras/mobile phones shooting either them or with them
4) Lack of privacy
5) Noisy, crowded places
6) Unwanted help or people
But still India is amazing.

I agree with previous posters, bring with them their favorite toy or two, blanket and/or clothes. Everything and anything you would ever need can be had in India. Maybe let them get a new toy or two there. Have fun, it's a beautiful place. I'm headed back in 10 days for a six month stay myself and can't wait.
