Actually, it is worse because so does Monarch as of yesterday! Taken from their website:
Quote:
NEW HOLD BAGGAGE POLICY - From 19 September 2007 all customers booking scheduled flights (flight number ZB) departing after and including 01 November 2007 will have to pay for each piece of hold baggage they take.
hold baggage - upon payment of any applicable charges
  • Up to 20kg hold baggage per person (exc. infants)
  • Excess baggage will incur a charge of Ģ5 (GBP) / €8 (EUR) per extra kg
  • Vantage Club Gold and Silver members - up to 30kg hold baggage per person
  • Maximum weight of any single hold baggage must not exceed 32kg

hand baggage
  • One item of hand baggage per person only - Other bags, such as handbags, may be carried within this single item of hold baggage
  • Maximum weight must not exceed 10kg per person
  • Total dimensions must not exceed 56cm x 45cm x 25cm
  • Cannot be combined with your hold baggage allowance
Hand baggage is "carry on".

Just checked the web site and you're right. From 17th September, anyone flying SCHEDULED with Monarch is charged Ģ10 for each bag checked into the hold. (less if paid on line)

The reason? "As an airline we incur baggage handling costs for hold baggage and it is now common practice amongst airlines to charge for hold baggage"

Good grief. They'll be charging passengers by weight next.

This does not apply to chartered flights (yet). Guess the package tour operators would complain. But hand luggage allowance is better with scheduled - 10k hand luggage, but only 5k chartered.

Sorry, know this is a bit off topic, although does relate to importance of "packing light"!

If they are a cut-price, no frills airline, then I can understand and sympathise with this. I fly with as much as I possibly can; you may fly with nothing --- I don't really mind paying an extra £10 or £20 to cover that.

It just becomes part of the budgeting exercise.

Hi

From last November, you can take liquids in hand luggage, but tight restrictions - briefly, bottles not more than 100ml, fitting in a small see through plastic bag. Reckon in practice, you could take 500ml each. Buy shampoo, shower gel on arrival (cheaper), and just take small sample bottled to tide you over.
Agree with diving dog about sunscreen, probably the only thing really worth buying in the UK.
Anything unused on return, sure someone there will be grateful for it!
