Packing for weather changes

Hi there,
I am new to the site and this is my first post. After much reading of the forums, I thought I'd start my extensive questioning with one on packing!

I will be in India from April 26th - May 19th. Flying into Delhi, and leaving shortly after on train to Kerala. We'll be spending a week or so in Kerala, a day or two in Goa (catching a plane from there), and then a week or so in Sikkim, before returning to Delhi. (A lot, I know, in 3 weeks!)

I've heard that it is very hot at this time of year in India, particularly in Delhi. I also know that Kerala is on/near the ocean, as is Goa, and understand that the weather there will be similair to what I'm used to in my summers at home (Florida). However, I'm not sure of the weather in Sikkim, and have heard it might be quite cold. With this in mind, I'm not sure how to pack (without overpacking!) for 2 weeks travelling from Kerala to Goa to Sikkim (I will leave a bag with friends in Delhi for that part of the trip).

I would love any suggestions on how to pack for this... what to take by way of clothing and shoes, keeping in mind that I am a typical girl and do need to have options, and more than 3-4 things to wash and wear over and over! :-)

Thanks so much! I am very much looking forward to all the great answers to my many questions as I prepare!

Hi,

My advice would be to take nothing with you but the clothes on your back and some undergarments!

Then you can go shopping for clothes and buy what you need, as you need it.

Clothes in India are very cheap indeed, and a budget of a few dollars will go a long, long way!

This way you can buy loads of lovely things to take home and not have to pay excess baggage.

The only complication you seem to be having is Sikkim, don't worry Sikkim really isn't that cold at this time, the evenings may be cool enough to warrent a fleece but these are available as John says at a very reasonable price.

The rest of your trip will be summed up in one word HOT, again buying whilst there is the best option but light cottons can also be taken from home until you get stocked up on Salwaar Kameezes or whatever. India of course specialises in clothes for a hot climate!!

Take with you underwear and shoes - the quality and selection you find in India probably won't be what you're used to. You might also want to bring sunscreen, bug repellant, and tampons, for the same reason. If you really dislike being cold, as I do, you might want to just tuck in your bag a thermal top and bottom. You probably won't need them, but you'll at least be comfortable if you do. Wear whatever on your flight and bring a spare change of clothing, then while you're there have a few salwar kameez custom made for you, and you'll be set! Anything else you might need you can buy there.

Thumbs up Hi NikkiSunshine,

Welcome to Indiamike.
I’ll advice you to keep a windcheater in you bag for the Sikkim trip and you need to buy a light woolen from the local market. You can expect some occasional short rain and chilly wind in this part of Himalaya, so the windcheater will be very helpful. And you will find excellent woolen sweaters in Sikkim that will become you souvenir / collection.

Wish you a very happy traveling.

Thanks!

Thanks everyone!
You've convinced me to pack less, for sure, which my travel companion is very grateful for!

And I think we've worked out another solution... a stopover in Delhi for a night, staying at my friend's house, to repack our bags for the Sikkim leg of the trip.

I appreciate the tips!
