Packing for Upscale Hotel

My wife and I will be staying in very upscale hotels on our 3 week visit to India in February. We will have three (3) domestic flights during our tour and have been advised to pack light - now my question which may seem both stupid and "off-the-wall" - will I need a sport jacket during our tour - especially in the hotels we are staying in? By the way - Indian friends have told me that we are not truly visiting India but really visiting the Hotels of India. Thanks so very much for a reply.

No sport jacket needed. A tuxedo will be fine.
The inconvenience caused is deeply regretted.

You may need a sport jacket to enter some of the more established private clubs. However, 'loaners' are often available at the coat check.

Show up in jacket and tie at any hotel in India, or at any airline counter, or at any place involving bureaucrats, and you will get better service. You may expire from the heat, and they may think you a flaming idiot, but you will get better service.

In your previous thread "Packing - Clothing Needs" I gave a link to a similar question about dressing up in India - I think it may offer further useful information.

Hi - I think you are right - I may be a flaming idiot - but to set the record right - we do not plan to go to private clubs. If we just eat basically in the hotels where we are staying would or should I wear a jacket. For the record - I usually do not wear a jacket when I eat in restaurants in the New York area. Thanks again for your advise.

No, there's no formal dress code in 5-stars. You'll see plenty of business men in their 'business' attire though. Leave your grungy jeans with the holes cut in them at home though .... upper class Indians do have their tolerance limits.

I arrive from a long flight in JWM/Hyatt/Intercontinental/Sheraton in cargo pants, or whatever is casual. No jeans, Abercrombie shorts etc. though.

All the posters who say you don't need a jacket are perfectly correct; and if you don't feel the need for one, don't take it.

On the other hand, since it seems likely that there'll always be someone on your five-star route to schlepp your bags, and since you worry that you might-just-might need one sometime, what can it hurt to throw one in?

As it happens, I feel more comfortable in a blazer in many circumstances – the effects no doubt of too many years in an up-tight prep school. It works well for me to look like a flaming idiot on occasion, so I exploit it.

Gymkhanas are different. They are clubs. They are membership oriented and the codes are entirely different from those of hotels. The memberships to these clubs are passed on from one generation to the next. Tell me currently about upscale 5* hotels.

We know. The OP asked if he might 'need' a sport jacket during the time of his tour. I said only if he were to be invited to one of the more 'established private clubs'. It happens on occasion.

The Delhi Gymkhana Club is one of those those places where you get "Angrezi Khana". That's about the worst food you get anywhere in the world.

Perhaps,,, but their hors d'oeuvres are fine & they actually put their beer on real ice ..... making it cold enough to qualify as 'refreshing' on a sultry summer evening. A rare bird to find in India at times.

"In your previous thread "Packing - Clothing Needs" I gave a link to a similar question about dressing up in India "

Would you be so kind as to post it here, as the search engine doesn't seem to want to cough it up?
