thanks bijapuri,
so no sleeping bag - what do u think we should take instead? one of those light liner things?? or a sheet?
as for shoes, why not hiking shoes??
we were thinking of doing some hiking in the national parks...
what sort of shoes do you think are sufficient?

cheers!

Oxen, one option instead of a sleeping bag (too hot!) would be to purchase a long, soft silk sari when you arrive and then have someone stitch it along the sides so that it's like a sleep sheet... it can be very comfortable, looks cool and most of all keeps the bugs out. I found the silk will roll down to a very small size, is lightweight and comfy on the train too.

Just bring light cotton clothes, you can get them washed often. As two females you'll want one set of semi-conservative clothes that don't bare your shoulders or thighs in addition to regular summer stuff. You'll probably buy Indian clothes when you arrive anyway so jump on the plane carrying the bare minimum.

As for shoes, a good pair of sandals are all you'll ever need... DON'T GO WITH FLIP-FLOPS, it might look "cool" to do the minimalist thing but it's hard on yer feet. My feet always got cuts when I wore them. Plus they suck during the rainy season (June++), trust me.

Buy a lungi--the long cotton sarong that men wear in Tamil Nadu. It's the perfect bedsheet, bathrobe, towel, etc. You can get one for a handful of rupees.
