North India 18th jan to 29 feb.

Hi
Im travelling to India for the first time in January/ february next year. I staying in Delhi at first and will be in Rishikesh in mid to late february, im considering bringing a micro fleece top and a fleece Jacket but as i want to travel as lightly as possible i was wondering if i can get away with just the micro fleece and layer up with other items of clothing, im not planning to go treaking or anything. Any advice really appreciated.

Hi HippySi,

Months like October and November are usually good. You will have days when it gets hot but never had that much of a problem myself. But, December, January, and February are usually good for foreigners. The weather is just right. It is not too hot or too cold.

I would take fleece top but no jacket. Everytime I go to India, I usually don't take a jacket. Usually buy one from there.

I personally haven't been to Rishikesh yet! But another IMer will come along and provide you more direct guidance.

Let us know how your trip goes!

When in Rishikesh . . .

do as the Rishikeshians do . . . take the light fleece if you want, but buy a shawl or something locally made. If you don't want them when you go home, give them to a local. I did this in Dharamsala, good for smiles/karma points

coming from california, i did not find it cold in rishikesh at that time of year. I agree with the above suggestion, just buy something warm in India if you end up needing it. I bought a beautiful shawl in darjeeling but i never needed it in rishikesh.

I didn't even think about that. haha It's not like you can show up at the airport in the UK in t-shirt and flip-flops.
Welcome to the site and have a wonderful trip!

We live in Vermont where it is very, very cold in the winter. When we fly out to India in the winter months, we wear microfleece sweaters to the airport which I then pack at the bottom of the suitcase for use in emergencies [ie cold weather]. We do wear light clothes and straw hats to the airport even in winter. I love to buy shawls and so the cold in the north is a great excuse to enlarge my collection.

One bit of advice, bring or wear a pair of light weight gloves or mittens to the airport and remember where you stashed them in your luggage. They will come in handy when you return home from warmer climes and are shocked by the winter weather at home. I forgot where I put ours when we returned this February to snow and wind chill temps here of minus 25 F [about minus 33 C ?] and walking from the airport to the car park was unpleasant to say the least.

Minus 25 F wind chill - the actual air temp was not that cold, but it felt like it was - probably it was just minus five to ten. After a 14 hour flight who remembers the small details?

BTW they sell microfleece with built-in wind block and it is worth it if you can get it.

You can, almost.

I wore an old coat and some old shoes and put them in a bin when I got to Heathrow, and put on my sandals.

It worked well......until I had to change planes in Moscow and they dumped us on the runway, it was -12.

I arrived in Rishkish in February this year and the ground was white with frost. By afternoon I was taking a dip in the river. I bought a cheap wool shawl to go over my fleece and when leaving gave it to one of the many beggars you will run into. Cold and windy most mornings and hot and nice most afternoons. Delhi is warm any time of the year. Happy trails.
