Question New travel gadgets

So my wife and I just had twins, right. They are awesome. But traveling is RIGHT out the window, esp not to India.

So in my pathetic state - I have been buying travel thingies to appease the "God of itchy feet". I know it's sad & no substitute, but there are some really cool space saving utili-junk out there. Here's some of the stuff I have found/use. Please share any discoveries.

Shaving Oil
http://www.somersets.com/products/sh...l-original.php
This stuff rocks. It's smaller than a champagne cork- but works better than a big shave gel.

Light for your Nagalene bottle
http://www.guyotdesigns.com/firefly
You replace the top of your drinking bottle with this. It works well - You can read by it. The light shines through the water and makes it even brighter. I used it on the dark side of Railay beach and avoided trippin on a big tree root - it works - downside, you'd need a mini screwdriver to change the batteries, and since I never carried a bottle before it's added to my load.

Flaresafe flashlight with smoke detector
http://www.flarebrands.com/FlareSafe.aspx
I got this but have never used it in the feild. Having kids makes me all safety man now - Looking back at some of the dumps ive stayed in, if there hadda been a fire, i'd surely be toast. The light on this thing doesnt seem extra bright, but the siren could wake the dead. I should hold it over a fire to see if the detector bit actually works.

Millet Solar Backpack cover
http://www.spadout.com/video_externa..._summ er_2007
This looks awesome. I want one - but I hear it's very expensive ( i.e. more than the iPhone your charging it with)

Leg Wallet
http://www.beltoutlet.com/legwalbyen.html
I used this like crazy in Bahia,Brasil during Carnival when you are literally getting pickpocketed every 30 seconds. It worked like a dream. Better than those stupid sweaty waist/neck ones.

I know, spend the money on an actual trip rather than knick knacks, but I can't right now so what do you do!

That firefly thing looks interesting.

Money and passport is always a problem. Dunno if I want it strapped to my leg, though. Have had embarrassing experiences with legs; once in interior Bihar, checking into a fleabag hotel, a knife fell out from my trouser leg climbing up the stairs

forgot these

Also...

IFlip Ultra video recorder
http://www.theflip.com/products.shtml
I got this to record kiddies, but it would be an excellent 'big camcorder replacement'. No tapes, no cables and at the size of a pack of cigs very "in pocket/at hand". It's not hi-def, nowhere near it, but i'd take this out in a crowd, where with a big camcorder I'd be paranoid.

BogenManfrotto 797 ModoPocket
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/AS...ssou0255152-20
I haven't got this, but it looks pretty useful and compact if your not hauling a dSLR

Macbook case
http://www.saunders-usa.com/rhinoski...=285&model=292

If your lugging a Macbook, this is very tough. I used it in Yunnan (I ditched the top cable box thingie).

double congrats on having twins
welcome to the parents' club

however, never thought that travelling would require so many gadgets.

hope that it's homo sapiens, not robots, that will travel.

Thx for the congrats. I'm determind to stay in the"Parents-who-travel" club.
I do hate this whole "Flashpacker" monicker(the inside of your backpack looks like circuit city)and your carrying more cables than clothes.

...but once in a while you find some invention(sometimes under$10 even) that goes in the "how the hell did I live without it" catagory.
An example would be the roll up pack organiser I got from hobotraveler guys site(he doesnt sell it anymore) but I ended up making my own cos I wore the first one out. You can pack and unpack in minutes and it crushes even a lot of clothes into a small sleeping bag style roll

like this

None whatsoever, for a few minutes there was utter confusion though, I admit. But then, what are friends for?

Sorry doonkin, and congrats on the twins.

I did mention that there was utter confusion?

Matter of fact, we were hoping to be booted out that night, so it worked out OK.

All's well that ends well, Hyderabadi Bhai.

Capt, Another interesting story, from Bihar this time.( I remember your distaste for Saudi Arabia, too)

Great set of gadgets. I really like the light for the water bottle. Is the shaving oil only for blade razors or also for electric?
