My wife travelled through Air France to Mumbai airport, few cloths and shoes (Gifts for nephews) got lost/stolen believe at Mumbai airport around 80 to 100USD value. Air France wants original receipts to reimburse and we never keep small receipts (Learnt my lesson) any advice? Also is it common at Mumbai airport?

If she payed debit or Credit card there will be a record to prove. Otherwise those small claims are a nightmare to recover (depending on who you are dealing with). You might show them where the lock was forced on broken on the suitcase - assuming it was secured!?

She paid by debit card but Air France specifically asks for itemised receipt. Also we never lock because almost everytime US Air port security used to open the bag and leave a little note about security check inside, so we decided to make their job easier! Between rock and a hard place.

Also those small gifts were a sentimental value, we bought with love when we had visited Seattle, LA and Canada. More love than money and that is where it hurt.

Who the hell keeps receipts for small items. They're trying to get out of it.

Sorry to hear of your misfortune.

You can now know if your checked bag was searched by a TSA agent, or violated by an unknown person, just by looking at your luggage lock. If you check your luggage you must leave it unlocked, or use a TSA approved lock, all others are prohibited.

You might try seeing if the store can regurgitate a receipt based on the debit records? Some cash reigster systems can do this nowadays.

I had one lock on my suitcase forced in New Delhi last time. They couldn't get the other side open so everything was fine.
Since the flight was direct to Toronto - it must have happened on Indian turf.

If there is a difference in weight (recorded at check in at presumably houston, and now), and you pointed it out, you may have a case.

Airlines pay per kg in the event of lost baggage, don't they, or do they still want receipts?!

I think without receipts you are out of luck on this one. Mumbai airport, as far as I know, isn't known for unusual amounts of theft.

Here is the U.S.A. though, they have busted several rings of insider employee baggage handler theft at a variety of airports over the years.

Considering the poverty of the employees of Indian airports it's actually surprising there isn't more of a problem (I'm sure there is always a problem with the temptations that occur).

I've never had anything go missing at an Indian airport. Hope this post doesn't jinx me for next time!

Difference in weight in India was not noted, because she did not notice missing items untill she reached home. We never knew about it anyway, good idea to weigh. Air France wants receipts, period.

Also they still wants our repeat business, since we were loyal travel Blue customers!

One thought is to "dispute" the charge. In cases when you dispute a charge - the merchant is required to supply a copy of the signed credit card slip. Of course, there are some counterpoints you might want to consider: (a) the ethics of doing that are a bit dubious in this instance, and (b) depending upon how the transaction was conducted - the credit slip signed might not contain the itemized receipt...

err, unless you have itemised the missing items for air france, do you have any receipts for anything approximating the lost value?

I had itemised the items first time I claimed. So out of luck on having any receipts approaximating the value! I have given up on that claim anyway but just mad as hell.
