my rucksacks too small :-(

just packing, fly out next week and have been a bit enthusiastic about what i thought i could actually fit in my rucksack. However painful it is i am currently working my way through the pile of stuff being extra strict with what i take with me. i know, i know, i can get it all when i'm out there, i know, i know that every extra gram of weight will frustrate me whilst i'm out there too, i know all this, but theres just loads of little comfy "things" i want to take!
its hard going by yourself too as all the essential bits that couples can split between them all have to fit in one pac. grrrhhhHHH!

hmmm, thats better, just needed to off-load!

Though it goes against prevailing opinion . . .

I always buy a bigger pack than I know I'll need . . . my thought on this is that I really won't be carrying/actually carrying, my pack for too long, I usually carry it from the hostel to the train, the train to the hostel, in between - I'm free! . . . I am one who needs my 'comfy stuff' too . . . and I am a shopper, sort-of . . . I pick up things for people along the way . . . I can spend the money shipping it home, or spend the money buying a larger pack to begin with . . . I'm envious of people who can take a 40L pack . . . and always glad I have 80L's . . .

i can empathize. my bag is tiny and it was fine -until i started with all the electronics crap. now i can close it but factoring in more cold weather clothes and balled up dirty clothes -its too small.

the bag i have used for 13 years is about 32L. im looking at a 38.2L bag now and id get it but online it appears not to have double zips for locking.

you obviosly are not getting a new bag so start tossing stuff! if you ar enew to travel and/or the bag try living out of it and see what you use.

if you are new to travel i bet there is a bunch of stuff you can toss - make a list and post it.

The problem I have is not the size of the bag, but the weight.

Air India allow me 32kg on my flight from the UK, but my internal flights only allow me 20kg!!!

Now what shall I leave behind????

What are you taking with you? It would help us help you. Anything heavy or unnecessary?

There is not really one item that is too heavy .. I think that I am just trying to take too much.

The spare batteries and chargers for video camera, digital camera, mobile phone, memory card backup device. They all seem to use different non-standard batteries and chargers.

I don't really need 2 guide books, so I'll photo copy the pages I need and leave the books at home.

and wear my heavy clothes ... I am going to Darjeeling for 2 and a bit weeks.

Ah yes, a bit difficult. It seems that you solved your problem. I'm only taking one digital camera and a battery charger so not as heavy - luckily. Good point about the guidebooks, probably a good way to deal with it!

Good luck with that

oh yes!

one or no guide book
one camera
one standard type of battery

if you have an ipod you can back up to the ipod.

I have a big rucksack ... space is not the problem

The limiting factor is the 20kg weight limit on the internal flights!!

I am!!! A week in and yes, I brought too much stuff!! People say you can get everything here for half the cost but would i listen? No! and now i'm in the process of sending half my things back to the UK so I can onward travel with a lighter load. A few things that I brought I'm so glad about eg, little pillow and a bed sheet that i'd sewn at the bottom and up the sides to make a big light sleeping bag. also glad i brought thin rope/gaffer tape/clothes pegs, they've come in handy, everything else i think i could have just gotten as and when i needed it.

only just had time to check this post so thanx for the replies, even if i was a little late in reading them

xx

I understand little pillow makes the trip much comfortable but a bed sheet /light sleeping bag? Are hostels in India that rough?
