My intended stuff (with photos)- please check! (5 month trip in North India/Nepal)
Hey, so i am flying into Mumbai to start a 5 month trip around Northern India and Nepal (am i crazy?).
I dont have much of a plan, other than seeing lots of stuff, but do plan on getting up to Kashmir, Everest Basecamp and Sikkim (so mountains).
This is reflected in my packing i think, but i dont want to drag too much stuff about. I will be doing things on a budget.
These are the clothes I am planning on bringing (bearing in mind i will be wearing 1 set of them!). Its missing 1 short sleeved shirt and 1 long sleeved shirt and 1 pair of underpants (currently in the wash)

2 pairs of lightweight trekking trousers, 1 zips to shorts
1 pair of swimming trunks
1 small towel
1 lightweight down jacket
1 light merino longsleeved top
2 light merino tshirts
3 pairs of socks
2 pairs of hiking socks
3 pairs of underpants
sunglasses
bandanna
hiking sandals
pair of merino thermals
sunhat
waterproof/windproof shell
Next up is my sleeping stuff

1 lightweight down sleepingbag
1 silk sleeping sheet
1 inflatable camping mat
Then its the STUFF ill be bringing

Lightweight cup/cooking pot with lid
headtorch
spare laces for boots (can be tied together to make clothes line)
3 litre water bladder
2 guidebooks
Kindle
the boots i forgot to put in the first photo
diary/notebook
two small dry bags
60litres worth of water purifying chlorine
penknife
spork
Last up is my two bags (and the hat i forgot to put in 1st photo)

38litre hiking bag
16litre day bag
And all together it looks like this! I dont think I have over packed, but have i under packed? (just realised i didn't include my washkit - just toothbrush/toothpaste and a shampoo/body wash combo)

Thanks guys!

interesting! and a good start too. Do you know how many kilos it comes up to? I find it most important not to carry too much weight. Otherwise: everything you forgot will be easy to buy in India itself. Also interesting: When will you go? Does any Monsoon come in or not?
Happy packing!

Is there much in the Rajasthan RG that isn't in the all India one? Those guidebooks get heavy on a hot day.

The inconvenience caused is deeply regretted.

Looks good, it's quite impressive that you can fit all that into 54 litres I must say! As you'll be spending most of your time in the mountains most of this stuff should come in useful at some point.
Can I ask, will you be carrying the day bag on your front? And as above, what does the weight come out to?

I agree with Dave.We cut our guidebooks up and only take the sections necessary from several books so we have different perspectives (we especially like Footprints India for its information.
Pete, you might consider doing this to decrease size and weight.

Well he has a kindle, so no need for the books at all really - you can download the individual chapters now as you need them along the way.
Another thought. If you plan to stache your big sack at railway left luggage rooms you must be able to show that it is securely locked. Not sure from the photo whether you have loops that would allow you use a couple of small padlocks for this but it might be worth thinking about.

Nice presentation
Yeah, cut the guidebooks . . . or, as I've done, just make notes . . . or, as during my past three trips, leave 'em at home. Talk to other travelers, they are the most up-to-date source you've got, AND you know something about the sensibility of the person making the suggestion/recommendation . . . (I've got a Kestrel 38, GREAT pack)(but way too small for my own quasi-Victorian approach
P.S. To answer your first question - Am I crazy? Of course, we all are!
Embrace your craziness! Embrace India! Safe travels

Thanks for the replies, and ill try to answer the questions. I arrive in Mumbai next week (still looking for somewhere to stay, if anyone has suggestions). I think i will miss the monsoon, but might catch the beginning while in Calcutta area in June (i assume).
The RG Rajistan book is about an inch thick, so has a lot more info than the whole India book. Once i have left the area, i was planning on giving the book away. I like having a big book with me, as it gives me something to read (if the Kindle dies), and more flexibility to change my plans.
Due to having lightweight stuff (titanium pots/ down insulated stuff) the current weight for the whole thing (including a Nikon d90 and 18-200mm lens) comes in at under 15kgs (based on past experience, dont have any scales here)
