Music on the move?
Going travelling for 6 months, what's the best way to bring music with you. MD or MP3?

Mp3. that's the way!
I've got to agree (as usual) with paan wallah. With an mp3 CD player you have the cross compatibility with "regular" CDs.
I'm taking 10 x CDs of mp3 compilations for my three months trip. I bought some other headphones for my machine (Philips Expanium) as I can't abide those crappy earplug things that come with most players - their bass performance is really inferior and they don't feel very comfortable. A pair of folding Koss Porta Pro phones was a steep €65, but their performance is outstanding, they're super light and they fold into the palm of your hand. ![]()

My mini disc player is now collecting dust and I also have been converted over to the portable cd players that play cd/cdrw's.
Like MT said you have the cross compatibility with regular cd's so you can pick some up in the shops there if you want. I am not sure on the prices in Ireland, probably slightly higher, but players in the US are dirt cheap, starting at 30 dollars or so. My personal pick right now would be the Sony S2 Sports line. It's rugged, water resistant, and has great sound. The higher end model also has an AM/FM radio. It's pretty sweet. Cheers Mike |

Thanks!
Thanks for that info. It looks like I'll be going with an MP3 player then. Also thanks for the recommendations on the headphones and player, I wouldn't know what to start looking for, MP3 isn't that big here yet so I reckon the players will be that bit more expensive though. How much was that Sony player Mike?

cdr/cdrw
For the Sony cd player here is a couple of links from Best Buy, they are an electronics store in the U.S. which is probably the lowest prices around.
Sony Water-Resistant CD-R/RW in US dollars is $99.99. This one is just the player. Sony Water-Resistant Sports CD Walkman AM/FM/Weatherband Tuner in US dollars is $129.99. This player has the AM/FM feature also. Both are pretty expensive as far as CD players go, but you get what you pay for. You do have a cd/cdrw burner on your computer right? If not these may or may not be the best choice for you. Cheers Mike |

The best way is actually to bring your favourite band or in fact selection of bands, and their tour buses, enterage etc. They can then play live for you wherever your travels take you. However this method can sometimes prove to be expensive and I could not reccomend it to someone travelling on a budget.

Hi!
First time I was in India I forgot to bring music. Last time I brought my CD-player since I couldnt afford anything else. But by meeting other people I realised I would prefer a MD before a MP3-player. Reason: You can copy music from people you meet + buy a microphone and record the Indian sounds, comcerts, people etc. |

Maybe Minidisc then..........
Thanks Charlottehagg,
A few people have recommended MD over MP3 since I first put up this post for exactly the same reasons you gave. Still don't know what to do though, MP3 V MD...............might just get a radio....dunno!?!??! |

Though I have converted to CDR's instead of Minidiscs, this player from Sony (MZ-N707) available at Planet MiniDisc looks pretty sweet.
It allows up five hours of music on one minidisc and can record MP3s or CDs At Up To 32X Speed. My older Sony player only recorded in real time and that was it's major drawback. Mike |

i've just got a panasonic MP3 cd player. so i'm going to record 20 albums on 2 cds. not tried it yet but it seems a good inexpensive option, without hassle of lugging a big cd wallet around with my prised best 20 cds in it.

The one pitfall to Mp3 recording at least for me is that the MP3 format adds a .002 second delay on all tracks recorded. No big deal if it's just one song, but if your recording a live album or your favorite Pink Floyd album the small gap proves to be a nuisance since when you burn it you get that gap on playback.
So choose a cd burning tool carefully and look for ones that can burn a whole album at once or remove that gap if you are recording live albums. I am using Nero for my cd burning (not recording) and it allows hand editing of that gap but it took me a dozen or so wasted cd's burning Klf''s "Chill Out" until I got the hang of it. Mike |

Diamond Rio at Best Buy 20 bucks
If you are in the US and can get to a Best Buy you might pick up the Diamond Rio SP50... I just got it for my upcoming trip to India. It was on sale for $49 with a $30 mail in rebate (which I sent in). A great deal and it works well with the MP3 CDs I burned using MusicMatch from my library (www.musicmatch.com). I have about 8 cds with about 9 hours of music on them each. That should take care of me for a while...
If I had the cash I would get a player that has its own media storage. There are players out there now that hold 20GB worth of music with no movable parts and no need to carry disks around. They are between $250-400. have fun. |
