Like you, LHD, I have an Australian ATM card and have to 'suffer' that $5 withdrawal fee - however, I always withdraw the maximum amount at any one time. I find it is still cheaper for exchange rate taking fees into account, than exchanging money or TC at a money exchange place.

...I'm showing ignorance here, but it suddenly occurred to me as I tried to get my head around what using atms in India would be like - wouldn't screen text,display etc all be in hindi?...

We had no problems using our NAB card in Rajasthan last month. But we took a few travellers cheques with us just in case and I would advise having a back up in case you get stranded.
The one occasion we needed them was because the only ATM was out of service!!! It is always handy to have some cash or TQ to exchange in a crisis.

All the ATMs have English as an option. You have to keep in mind that English is the offical language in India as far as banking is concerned.

...thanks everyone...shows you how quickly things have changed since I last travelled os...think I'll carry keycard as backup to travellers cheques....

Darryl - it's a perfectly legitimate question! We have only had ATM's here for about the last 3 -4 years, and what a difference they have made for me! No more long hours in the bank, just to get your money out. The ATM's are very similar to the ones in Oz -and you will have no trouble with finding your way around their menus. Make sure your card has Maestro, cirrus or Visa Mastercard type logo on it and can be used overseas.

I just googled 'Visa Plus' and got tons of info re bank ATM's in India - so daresay you can do the same for any bank these days.

I'm in India and tried to accesss my TD account with my bank card, at an appropriate ATM and it wouldn't work

. It said something about an invalid account! I don't suppose you have any idea? Did you have to do anything at your bank in NS before you came to India? I'm very frustrated right now and really not wanting to pay the exorbiant fees to have to cash advance from my credit card for the two months I'm here! Thanks for your help.

You can ring your bank and ask them to check they have validated your card for overseas - this needs to be done before you travel, as often it is not done automatically. The other thing may be that the ATM is only used for a specific bank - not all ATM's are valid for other banks' cards. Check there are symbols displayed in the ATM for Visa, Cirrus, Mastercard, Maestro etc. You mention 'appropriate' so I guess that ATM did have all these symbols there.

Ah, good old TD. I've been there, done that, got the useless form letter from their customer service department telling me they work anywhere the PLUS symbol is displayed.

They do not work at every ATM with the PLUS symbol, only at HDFC and Citibank. But there are lots of HDFC ATMs around, plus Citibank in the major cities.

Maedchen, your TD bank card will definitely work at all ATMs belonging to HDFC. If you can tell us which city in India you are currently staying in then I can give you a list of HFC ATMs in that particular city.

TD is a kind of pain in the neck because so few machines accept it. Might be something in the security, I always have to insert the card twice to refresh data, maybe only a few machines will work with it. CIBC cards work in a lot more machines. If you don't want to keep money in CIBC you can always just open up an account and do an email transfer for the amount you want to withdraw before you go to the ATM. (More fees of course)
