Apologies in advance if I have missed an answer to my following question. Have searched high and low to no avail...
I'm from Australia and have a debit account linked to my credit card. In SE Asia I found ATMs allowed me to select which account I wish to withdraw $ from (i.e. my Australian bank account or cash advance from credit card). In Europe, however, I found myself having to use cash advance from credit card only when withdrawing $ (and subsequently pay much more in bank fees) as ATMs failed to "see" my debit account. Would anybody be kind enough to shed some light if Indian ATMs accept (recognise/read) multi-account ATM cards and actually recognise both accounts linked. Many thanx in advance! |

The ATMs I used in India generally asked me whether I wanted to withdraw money from a savings account, current (checking) account or credit card account.
In Europe, as far as I am aware, we don't have multi-account cards, which is why machines don't ask which account you wish to use. |

Yes - the ATM's I've used here will allow that card - you press 'Savings' for your savings account. No problems.

Are you trying to withdraw amount from your Australian Bank Account via a debit/ATM card in India? If yes, I seriously doubt that ATMs will allow you to do that. You must be having a saving/current bank account with the bank of which you are holding a debit card and this account should be registered in India.
I strongly suggest to check this with your bank. If your bank has presence in India, ask them that will they allow you to take money out of your Australian bank account in India *without any extra charges*. You can take the cash from Credit Cards because they are linked by international network via Visa, Mastercard, AmEx etc. As you mentioned, there is a separate fee associated with this. |

Barclays, UK, used to use the same piece of plastic for credit, debit and ATM.
Do they still do that? Must be plenty of Barclays customers travelling here: what does the machine do, debit your bank account, or your barclaycard account?

I understand that the local Indian bank I would use must be participant to a Maestro/Cirrus or Visa PLUS interbank network for me to withdraw. And since majority of Indian banks I have done research on are, withdrawing $ from international bank accounts shall not be a problem, I believe.

yes - that's right, LHD. I've accounts with TD trust (Toronto Dominion Bank) in Canada - my ATM card has the "Plus" logo (as well as Interac) - so I checked with TD, and there are many many banks in every city in India which allow debits from overseas accounts - however, in the case of TD bank - your ATM allows withdrawals from chequing or savings accounts - the TD Visa allows cash advances from Visa credit card (but don't forget the heinous credit card charges on cash advances.....). I know you can use debit cards pretty much worldwide - so long as the logo is appropriately linked.
I just googled 'Visa Plus' and got tons of info re bank ATM's in India - so daresay you can do the same for any bank these days. |

Oh, that is great info!!!
LHD, I just meant that before taking it as granted, give a call to your bank and make this clear. I know a friend who was allowed by the ATM machine to take the cash out but there was a charge for that. Later when he called the bank, he realized that he was lacking correct info. |

I checked with TD as well and they emailed me a form letter listing dozens of banks, claiming that anything with a PLUS logo would work, and that turned out not to be the case.HDFC and Citybank seemed to be the only banks which consistently accepted my TD debit card. Check this thread for more info: Delhi Debit Cards . ![]() |

The information from TD is not accurate. Your TD ATM card will only work with HDFC machines and with Citibank machines in India. HDFC is the third largest bank in India and they have an extensive ATM network in India. Citibank on the other hand only has a few branches in India confined to the bigger cities mainly.

I use a Credit Union Visa card (QTCU in Australia), which draws on my ordinary transaction account as its first choice, then morphs (automatically) to debit my withdrawals onto my credit card a/c when my cash runs out.
I have used it in Plus affiliated ATMs in Sri Lanka, Indonesia, Cambodia, Malaysia and throughout the USA, Canada and Europe. I'm assuming it will work just as well in India. I do pay a $5 fee each time I use it in a foreign ATM - but I always get a good exchange rate. |

Two, $5 per transactions!!! Personally, I would try to get another type of card of use another bank for this. $5 in India converts to more than 200 bucks and can get me 40 cigarettes or 100 cups of tea!!! ![]() |
