Moving to India--Packing List

Just thought I'd post this, see what y'all think. I am moving to India in 6 months for minimum two years, so I figured I'd take the essentials for a month to give myself time to hunt things down, but anything that can be gotten in India I'd rather get there. I'll be living in Bangalore and shopping in Mumbai with friends, so shopping will be accessible. My only weight worry is how much they'll let me take on the plane!

this is, of course, apt to change, but what else do I have to do for 6 months?

Clothes:
1 pair slacks
1 pair jeans
2 skirts; 1 ankle length, 1 mid-calf
3 T-shirts
1 pair running pants (for sleeping/ultra casual)
2 nice tops
underclothing (no socks, I think)
my sari
hiking sandals
flip flops (1 pr)

Do I need to take tennis shoes/hiking boots, or can I just buy them when the time comes?

Other:
Toiletries to last one month inc:
contact lenses & solution
glasses
sunscreen
bug spray
foot lotion
etc.

French Press for coffee
Apple Peeler/Corer/Slicer (2 lbs & the coolest thing I own!!)
Cotton sheet sewn into bag
My bed spread
Afghan my grandma made
Pictures (planning on buying most frames in India?)
One small painting (about 1 lb)
Tamborine (yes, I play)
baby wipes

CDs in CD book (about 200...)
DVDs: LOTR series
a couple others for homesick days
(how available are English movies in India? To play on laptop?)
Books on CD in CD book for plane/travel/etc.
Camera: SLR with Tripod, Flash, and Film (2 lenses)
Digital Camera (yet to buy...)
iPod shuffle
Laptop with external speakers
Batteries
MagLite (mini?)
Gerber multipurpose knife

Drawing Supplies
P-500s (my fave pens! At least a set of 6!)
Nalgene Bottle
Water Filter?
Drink Mix (for homesick, too).

And any additional space will be packed to the ounce with books. I have a list of about 40 that *must* go with me... I may pay for additional baggage to take as many as possible. This is a non-negotiable. *grin* And any of my friends coming to visit are ordered to grab a box from my parents on their way.

So, whaddya think?

Talking

I think you packed a lot
Do get some tennis shoes. Flip flops and sandals would do good but tennis shoes are required most of the times.

Unless you're an unusual (for India) size, you can buy almost all of those clothes in Mumbai. What you might want to bring from home is underwear: bras, underpants, and socks. You might not find the styles and quality you're used to at home.

Some of those look like sentimental items. Remember to leave anything at home that you couldn't bear to lose.

What is usual and unusual India size ?
Just want to know that, i have difficulties finding clothes in my own country, so, what is small and what is large over there ?

Well... maybe someone else can describe what is usual. I just know I'm not it. I'm 6 feet tall (183cm), I have broad/swimmer's shoulders, and my shoe size is 12EEEE. Off-the-rack Indian clothing doesn't fit me and nowhere in India do they sell shoes in my size (can't fault anyone for that since I usually have to buy my shoes online even at home in the U.S.). The only shoes I buy in India are chappals - men's.

Yes, most is sentimental. That is good advice... I may have to rethink a couple. And, I may take just enough clothes for a couple days and get some as soon as I get there...to make room for the tennis shoes I'll have to buy.

Jyoti, engish movies are readily available in india. Sometimes, even before they release in US Also if you'd be staying in delhi, you can visit the famous Palika Bazaar for buying CD/DVD of any english movie for a small price of $2-3 US. Not bad becasue some DVDs have more than 5 movies.

The picture quality will be awful if 5 movies are crammed into one DVD. You would get VHS picture quality with that kind of configuration.
