MUI for me was that "portable" travel tent I took to use on top of a bed, to protect me from BIG BUGS! I only saw one big bug in all of my travels, moved out immediately. Finally sent the tent home (in one of five packages of other MUI's sent home over the 6 weeks!)

Very entertaining thread! Reminds me of taking turtlenecks to California in July!
Coming back to MUI in India:
I carried a sleeping bag (down) in March to Madhya Pradesh!
I think it is a good choice for a visit during Dec to Feb though!

Well, I haven't read the whole thread, but seriously do not take a camera tripod of any size to India. You will not get it past security at a single monument.

This might now be termed as the MUI, but I purchased a pack of toilet paper in Jaisalmer in 2011 and completed a circular Rajasthan trip. Then I traveled to Darjeeling, Rameswaram, Banagalore, Pondicherry in 2012 with 'it' in my backpack. But still today the said toilet paper is unpacked.

Useless - pair of boots since I normally am comfy with flip flops
Useful - Iphone - kept me entertained while on those long travels. Played games, listen to music and stuff.

Or, take a tripod and shoot something other than monuments. We have used it successfully, for example, for kathakali dance and for mountains, also for night photography.

Very well then I contradict myself,

Go up the mountain cable car near Palm Springs. Even the locals get caught off guard by the tremendous temperature gradient..

Another MUI - the U shaped pillow or neck supporter... it's supposed to keep me comfortable but the feeling is not as expected!
