mosquitos and other pests

I've read some really scary threads on here about bed bugs and mosquitos. I'm headin off to India for the first time very soon. I've bought some DEET and Permethrin, but I've read on here that sometimes even that is not enough. I plan to wear long sleep clothing and long pants most of the time but I'm more concerned about sleeping at night and getting bitten all over the head. Would be really weird to sleep with a mosquito net on yoru head or use one of those mosqito nets that cover the entire bed?

mosquito nets in india are use quite commonly and can be purchased in India at a reasonable price.

.........just to note.........winters are abt to start in India, although winter starts from Mid-october, however, it takes almost 1st week of November before u start feeling cold (in north india that too in planes); winter season comes much earlier in hills............so the danger of most of the bugs, mainly mosquitos, is far less compared to summers since most of the bugs will be running for their life in this season....

but it is still advisable tht u tek proper protection........

actually I didn't even consider that. In all the posts that I've been reading about mosquitos, it never mentioned the time of year. I'm going to be there from 13th-29th of October. Hopefully the mosquitos won't be as wicked during this time?

I sleep in a sarong and T-shirt, covered with a sheet, and always sleep with the fan on. Mosquitos can't land on you in the breeze created by the fan! That plus mosquito coils usually suffice for the Indian winter season.

althoug i still don't know where u r heading in india but wud advise that u tek proper precautions; nothing fancy, just cover ur body as much as possible, keep the fan on; Mosquito repellent coils are big no-no, as they sometime can create suffocation in a closed room; electric mosquito repellents are a far better option for that.......easily available, costs less than 100 bucks, lasts for 45 nights; u just need electricity......

An air-cooled room with fan on usually does the trick.

Air-cooled room with fan on, plus leave bathroom door slightly ajar with light on - better!

Air-cooled room with fan on, plus leave bathroom door slightly ajar with light on, plus a little of you favourite repellent as a barrier along your blanket edge - worry free night sleep!

Crvlvr's avatar is not an anti-mosquito method! A net that covered the head only would be a waste of time. Actually they almost never bite my head or face, but they love my ankles

Be careful about leaving bathroom door open in hotels. The hotel room may be double-glazed, air-conditioned and mossie-proof. The Bathroom, however, may have an open, unglazed unnetted vent to the outside world. Mosquito Motorway!

Always assume your room has mosquito activity! If there is excess moisture present they may be propagating as well. Unless you get the fumigators to
fog the room before you go to sleep -they're going to spend the night with you! Co-exist with them and outsmart them!

Mosquitos are attracted to heat, moisture and carbon dioxide. The fan will dilute and dispurse the CO2 and heat coming from your body. The ever-present moisture in the bathroom and heat from the bathroom light acts as a next-best and powerful lure for the mosquitos - They will gravitate there. Of course, this is assuming the bathroom is not a virtual tent door and open-air to the outside world! At any rate most 4 star and lesser hotels do not have air tight doors so there will be gnat migration - Point them away from your bed!

They bite where the flesh is least...easy targets are ankles, arm sides. Blood is just below the thin layer of skin

I find a mosquito net that covers my bed works better than any repellent anyway.

If you have to re-arrange the room to get it to hang from somewhere it's worth it.

I threw my DEET that i bought in the UK away because it was just stinking my bag out and burning my skin!

I put a little bit of Odomos on if I'm outside around the 5.30 - 7pm mark but other than that wear long trousers and just watch them drool through my bad-ass mossie net!

Don't forget...

Don't forget to arrange your mosquito net early in the day - before the mosquitos are flying around.

If you put it down at night, the chances are that some mosquitos will be trapped INSIDE the net!

They'll bite through it as well if you lie up against it

Mine is bright blue, and the mossies seem to love it, which makes them easy to pick off with my mossie-zapper. And, if they have got inside, well then, no escape!

India turned me into a mass-murderer!
