I find the North too hot for trousers - so the South would defintely be a 'shorts destination'. It's all relative to where you come from and what you are use to though - ambient temperature wise.

I have been mostly wearing...
My pants (English understanding = underpants) are boxers from Marks and Spencers in UK. For Outerwear i refuse to wear any kind of trousers, finding that the traditional vesti (dhoti) is comfortable and practical, albeit now considered old-fashioned. Thus I represent the truly international face of tropical comfort, defining a New Cool for Hot Days. I also stay alive. ![]() ... Wear what ever you find comfortable to wear in high temperatures/humidity! You'll be hot; you'll sweat. Lightweight is good; easily washable is good...

Heavy denim not suitable.
I see local guys wearing it, and even corduroy --- like what I would wear in a UK winter!--- but, unless one has several generations of acclimatising (rather more than my three years, at least) it is a no-go. |

It is best to practice before appearing in public
![]() Looks like you should come as you are, and make an early visit to the local shops. |

Wear light trousers (loose cargo pants), shorts (but not inside religious places) or a veshti as Nick suggests (with strings attached).
As for me, I won't have bothered wearing any if "Shakeela" was around ... la la di da ![]()

Foreigners in shorts stick out like a sore thumb in India. Typically only boys wear shorts in India.

Not really. A lot of foreigners visiting Calcutta wear shorts and no one cares a hoot. But yeah it depends on what type of place you are travelling to. |

A think apart from wearing them at certain religious sites and possibly upsetting the odd myopic mind of the british-raj dresscode hangeron-ers cum fuddieduddies
- shorts are fine. There are so many lengths & styles nowadays - that it's much easier to please the 'fashion police' wherever they may be lurking. ![]() Certainly within the sports/athletic communities, the clubs & lobbies of the 5* hotels, and even within/around the affluent neighborhoods of India - shorts are trendy and definitely not out of place. ![]() |

Adult male tourist wearing shorts really stands out and borders on being offensive and insensitive. Please only at the beach or inside a guesthouse. It's dressing up in a little boy costume.
Any light weight pants will do fine. My first day in Madurai I had a pair made, which is a great experience. |

Tilley shorts. Not nearly as offensive as a ghori in a lunghi.
