Maximum Size of Carry-On Luggage

I'm trying to cut down what I take, so I have decided that I will take only one smallish suitcase - a 115cm (45 inch) - which wont leave me with much room for clothes. A self-limiting strategy which should work - I hope .

I'm flying Qantas and I understand that 115cms is the maximum size for carry-on luggage, so hopefully I wont have to wait for my bag at Mumbai or be concerned about any tampering. Has anyone had trouble taking a case that size as carry-on? (The size of the bag comes from adding the height, width and depth of the case)

(Previously posted elsewhere - sorry about the repeat but it was really off topic there. Thought a new thread was more appropriate.)

This depends on quantas during your check in. You should check with them. Other IMer's experiences will be pretty much irrelavant. Also, some airlines will weigh carry-on baggage to see if it under the weight limit. Plus, their are a lot of items that cannot be carried on the plane -- nail files etc., but can be part of the checked in luggage.

crvlvr - thanks for your comments. Yes, it seems that check in staff have a lot of discretion - both ways. I've had some past experience of not being allowed to take in-cabin a small bag as carry-on luggage (which was well inside the carry-on allowance).

Without being paranoid, after claims of what happens at Sydney airport, I'm now concerned about possible tampering with my luggage, particularly on the way back into Australia. It sure would ruin a holiday to be for drug charges on return from a wonderful India holiday!!
