Male clothing
Hello all,
Silly question, but here it is anyway: is it acceptable for a western man to wear bermudas in India? I guess it is not very recommend for cultural reasons but I would like to have opinions about it. Thierry Brussels, Belgium |

Thierry,
Even in western societies, certain forms of "Bermuda shorts" can be considered inappropriate and indeed offensive. For the forum members to post an answer, we will need further information in relation to the design and colour of the garment! |

mmmmh....
In my opinion: It is okay at the beach and in the restaurants around the beach. I can't remember men wearing bermudas during travelling. I believe a light trouser which ends below the knee would be better. I don't know if it is acceptable or not. As a Non-Indian in India, people stare at you anyway ![]() |

I think Bermuda shorts would only be okay with the appropriate long socks and proper shoes. Barelegged and with sandals -- no way!

Bermudas, long socks and sandals?
Maybe you should just stick with the long pants instead... |

I've certainly worn shorts on previous India trips - not sure one would classify them as Bermuda. Usually, I've worn them with Tevas and a t-shirt - and haven't ever got a second look from anyone (not that I've tried to wear them anywhere requiring remotely formal dress). In my experience, f you look remotely foreign, the locals tend to assume you're going to dress somewhat diffferently than they're used to - and cut you some slack. No short, shorts, however...PLEASE...those should be outlawed anywhere!

When I went to India,I took a couple of pairs of shorts but never felt comfortable to wear them.I suppose if you are in Goa or any beach areas it feels ok,But because i was in city areas i didnt feel right.Mind you also being Indian myself,I didnt feel right, because I couldnt see any other indians wearing them.

Thanks fort your advice and opinions.
Just confirms what I was thinking: in case of doubt, stick to long trousers. I do not want to offend anyone with the sight of my legs. ![]() |

TheirryBxl,
Indians usually do not wear shorts out of modesty. It doesn't mean that you would be offending anyone if you wore one. ![]() |
