you could always bag your hair in India and bring it back with you.

Just wash it every few days, put leave in conditioner in, plait it tightly in a plait down your back and if you are brave enough stop in every so often for a wash and conditioning treatment in a salon...By the time you get home it will be even longer and in great condition... then you can just get the ends trimmed and decide if you want to cut it off or not... Check this out - I know he has dreads, but here is a guy who isn't afraid of Princess Leia buns - he also wears a bun at the back, pigtails, plaits, one plait - you name it..... You've made the statement by growing it, don't back away now! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BDFMaSMr5YA

Well, years ago, stuck in Delhi when the temperature was above 40C, I cut my waist-length, curly hair, wrapped the cut-off pieces in a handkerchief and stuck it in the bottom of my travel bag.

It hardly takes up any space or weight, and if you did something like this, you'd still be able to donate it to Locks of Love (or whoever) when you return to Canada.

Oil, oil, oil. If you're not using it all over your head, it's fine. I have relatively thin straight hair with a tendency to frizz and it was fine with the oil. You can buy it pretty much anywhere and the coconut stuff smells lovely (though that was more common in the south - in the north it was some other kind).
I also had no problem buying western brands of conditioner in most larger towns/touristy places.
