Explain how you plan on living during your trip, how much time will you spend in wilderness and how much at lodgings?
To start with, everything in your pack should be in a plastic bag, preferrably different plastic bags. ie. clothes in one bag, sundries in another etc. You need to pack your pack in such a way that you generally put the things you use the most in the most accessable areas of your pack. Marmot is first class gear ;-) PS don't forget a light laundry sack |

Swap the ex-lax for a universal bath plug and you will probably find that a lot more useful !! SLIPERS
I M H O .it is all far to much. It is often forgotten that most things can be bought in India ,and a lot cheaper as well!!! I always start with the absolute minimum and buy what is required when it is needed .That way you don't Cary to much and you have room for some nice interesting things you will probably find on the way . I will definafely note the Universal bath plug!!!!
I will leave the slippers!!. You think I can find some $1 rubber slippers in India, for bathrooms and stuff?? *****MECASA****** You have helped me out so much over the months. Dude, im stressin on this. I got 11 days, and still dont know what I wana do!!! The city life is temporary because of health concerns, so I would like to head out more to the country side, but not out in the boonies alone... After buying the Nepal and Indina LP book, and reaading pages in the trecking section,it seems there are MANY trecks that are suitable for solo treckers. It seems there are 3 types of trecks: 1) day trecks around the village/town/city 2) 1-10 day trecks, each day stopping at another small villgage, hoping to find food and shelter. This is the kind of trecking I wana do!! Nothing really extreme, 5-10 miles a day (10-20km), and finnaly rest at the next village along the road. This way I dont need a REAL tent, just my misquito-tent. I hear Nepal is great for this, and Himichal Pradesh Uttaranchal. **am I correct??** 3) Organized hard core mountain trecks which require a real tent. I may or may not do this kind of organized trecks. Its because to require organization, I figgure it means strenuous trecking into dangerous places. If its not that dangerous, then I wouldent pay for an organized tour at all!. I am intrested in all three, but mostly #1 and #2. This has A LOT to do with my shoes. I got a brand new pair of DVS skate shoes that are tough. They are not water proof, but they are durable. I dont know if I should spend another $150 on good "trecking shoes" and leave the Skate shoes at home...I just dont know what to expect!! I want to Check out mostly Nepal, Uttaranchal, HP, Assam, Sikkim, and hike around those areas between march and late April. The weather should be decent without much rain, right? ..I just dont know what to think, or how to plan! Last edited by Wazen : Jan 2nd, 2006 at 08:40. |

Your packing list sounds quite good. But why the army blanket? That seems like way too big/heavy. A very light weight down sleeping bag would be much more useful for warmth to space to weight ratio. Or You don't need to bring it at all. You can rent blankets for overnight train rides at the train station, or they sometimes even come with the first class sleeper bed. You can rent what you would need for any kind of Nepal trekking when you are in Nepal. The Longroad mosquito net is excellent and you should bring it even if you don't use it much. And as was already noted, you can buy most anything in India. Like candles!
I do bring a neat little candle lantern and do use it, but you don't need to, they sell candles all over, since the electicity is pretty erratic. |

Camelgirl,
Perhaps im incorrect, though I recall you saying "I always take my travel tent, lug it around and never use it, then send it home half way through, next time ill leave it at home (maybe)" Yeah the thing is great! Its sooo small and I can buy a tarp and use it as a real tent if I wana go Bush-Man out in the boonies ![]() The amry blanket is not heavy at all. Its US Millitary issued, super light weight, compacts into barely anything, and keeps you super warm. Its the best and only blanket I found.. Its a keeper ![]() Your right about finding things in India...I could have saved atleast $200 buying supplies there.. |

Nope that wasn't me.
I've said lots about the Longroad nets. I have both the skeeter defeater, which I've taken though I didn't need it much was glad to have it when I did need it and the travel tent which I haven't used yet. I've also made 5 India trips before I bought the skeeter defeater and did just fine, but now that I've got it I will always bring one of them. |

MeCasa,
I started a new thread for this exact reply, by mistake, and I cant figgure out how to delete it. I was just saying thank you. Camelgirl, Although it takes up like 15% of my bag, it feels worth it. Also I think a few days I may have to behind open doors, like under a simple roof when doing some trecks.. Either way, my dreads are a little safer from lice! |
