linens n' things

Do most guest houses (rated as 1 - 3 in the Rough Guide) supply towel(s), sheet(s) and a pillow, or do I need to bring these items? I'm hoping to fit my very light and small summer sleeping bag in my carry on bag (nights in HP can be cool, I've read), but not to bring the other items unless they are not provided. Thanks for your always thoughtful ideas.

Towels - NO

Sheets & Pillows - Yes

But its a good idea to carry a spare towel or two just in case you don't feel comfortable using the one's they provide.

The cheaper guest houses often don't provide towels, and the sheets may be gray and holey. You should take a sleeping bag liner and a small towel.

Ew! Sounds like bringing one's own is a good idea. Can you buy towels inexpensively enough in most towns or is it better to bring one across the ocean?

Towels can be easily bought in the smallest of towns. They cost anywhere between Rs 200 - 300/- for a reasonable one.

If you like your pillows soft, get a small travel pillow; the ones in most really cheap guesthouses are like slabs of rock.

Instead of a towel, I usually carry a sarong (lunghi) or two to dry with. They are thin cotton, and will easily fit in a 1-qt plastic bag if they are still wet when you travel. You do NOT want them to mildew in your suitcase!

I've decided on a combination of your great ideas. I'm taking my two sarongs (at least, I think that's what they're called...two lovely, light, large scarves from Bali, blanket size, actually.

They'll find use as towels/sleeping bag liner, dress, with enough pins and even a pillow. The plastic bags are a great idea.

I have a leftover backpacking towel which, by shrink-wrapping, is the size of a 50 cent piece. With one more to complete "my ensemble," I think I'll be all set.

Lugging around that shrink wrapper might be a bit of a hassle, though.

i took one of those inflatable travel ones and was really glad i did, most places i stayed had no idea a pillow was not a thin, hard piece of fabric!
