Laptops

Hi there, I leave for Chennai in less than two weeks.

I am going to check with the airline but a colleague wants me to bring a laptop for him, and I already have two.

Does anyone offhand know if there is a restriction on this ?

Let me know!

You can bring your own laptop.

So don't carry it in in the brand-new box!

Ahh...

You can bring one laptop.

Sorry, I should have read your post properly before replying.

I guess you can bring as many as you like... but not duty-free

Hi there these defintions of tourists seem to indicate a variety of tourists but all refer to pakistani or napal or some other form of tourist, but i don't see it linked to general tourists.

Nepal and Pakistan are always singled out. If you're on a Business Visa with a covering letter, I think you'll be OK. Here's another link http://www.cbec.gov.in/cae/travellers.htm

hi

Yeah I am going to check it out I am going ot assume i should go through the red zone and say I am declaring two of them ? and they decide if its duty free ?

I have the business visa and work letters etc.... so i can use that and show them a return ticket....

its just very confusing i mean i can pay duty, i just want to avoid the idea of having them refuse me entry with the three laptops and have me dump them lol...... i dont mind paying duty even though they are all laptops for personal use (one is a replacement for a colleague) and one is my play laptop and one is my work laptop....

Thanks for all the help

if you pay duty, it is probably cheaper to buy the laptop in india.

and, going through the red channel, specially as an irregular traveller to india, indicates clearly to the customs guys that you think you have something dutiable to declare.

customs cannot bar you entry for this. they can make it expensive, though.

Unless they agree to pay whatever duty you will be charged (and it could be a substantial percentage), then they are asking you to commit a crime. So 'forcing' does not come into it. Nor would it be any excuse to customs, so no point in telling them.

You pay's your money and takes your choice, as the saying goes...

And whereas many small things may well go unnoticed, an excess of electronic gear is exactly the sort of thing they watch out for.

The Customs and Excise site is working ok

Hi

Ok I agree about the fact that if you go through the red channel you will be scrutinzed but wouldn't trying to walk through the green one with three laptops as carry ons be asking for trouble ?

Just want to figure out what the best way to do this.

How would Indian customer asses the value on my say 4 year old work laptop and my 2 year old play laptop ?

Just curious
