Does anyone have good suggestions or personal recommendations for mid-priced hotels in Kottayam in February? Also I'd like to do some trips from Kottayam as a base ( Munnar; Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary; maybe Periyar if it's not too far ) and wondered if readers had comments about the various merits or otherwise. Thanks!

Can't help you with Kottayam info, but I arrived there by ferry from Allepuzha last spring, had a quick look around, saw it was not so special and decided to go straight to Thekkady (3-4 hours away, around Periyar park) which I think was a good move - it's a much nicer place to hang out and was much cooler in May. There are some good guesthouses with huts near the park entrance with great views of the forest. From Thekkady there's a direct bus to Munnar too - a nice ride in the hills and along amazing cliffs. From Munnar you can catch a bus back down to Kochin along another stunning road skirting huge waterfalls and lush jungle.

Allepy can be a convenient base to go to Ernakulam, cochin, Kottayam and other places.
