Knitting needles/ Crochet pins?
Ok, so I KNOW that no big sharp needles are going to get through the airport. When I went to Africa I figured this too. UNFORTUNATELY NO ONE KNITS IN GHANA.
I found crochet pins everywhere and discovered a whole new hobby but this time I want to know ahead of time. Does anyone knit or crochet and can you tell me if they have needles and pins at the markets?

I managed to smuggle crochet pins - and yarns! - to India. I packed them in a case in my backpack & checked-in the backpack. When I returned, I forgot the pins in my hand baggage, but nobody noticed or cared. Knitting & crocheting are a good way to make contact with the locals + you can always give away your achievements as gifts.

I have taken knitting needles to India and always take my favourite kitchen equipment - as Nick-H says - always in checked in luggage.
One year my son put my kitchen knife in the wrong plastic box and I put this box in my hand luggage so I am now missing my favourite ever knife.
I do cross-stitch on the plane and "hide" my needle in lots of cotton and use a small craft blade (it is in a plastic holder - not seen until you push it out) for cutting it and have never had them taken from me in many International airports.
If you are thinking of doing any "serious" knitting then take the wool with you. The colours are all very bright and usually have lots of nylon in them.

You can also buy very nice silk embroidery threads in India! I may have a lifetime supply; bought too much years ago!
