Hi,
I will be in India during Feb, spending a week in Kerala and then 2 weeks in Rajasthan. I am planning on buying some fabrics (for bed spreads, cushion covers etc etc) and am wondering where the best place would be to buy these - in Kerala or Delhi/Rajasthan? I realise this could be a matter of opinion, but is there a clear winner here based on choice, price, quality etc? Thanks Last edited by machadinha : Jan 8th, 2008 at 22:03. Reason: adjusted title |

Best advice: buy it when you like it. You will find out that the wonderfull design you see on day two will not be available anywhere else (personal experience ;( ).
I your last city in india is Delhi, then you will be able to buy most stuff from all over India in the row of government emporia near Connaught Place. Hans

there are shops that sell khadi cloth which is supposed to be hand loom and is mostly cotton. i found a tiny shop on mahatma ghandi road in trivandrum and the fabrics are divine and amazingly cheap. i think the government run stores also sell the khadi cloth and are probably all over india.
rajasthan used to be very good for bright coloured cottons and tie died fabrics. bed covers are really cheap and you will find many shops that sell those in huge varieties of patterns and colors. you are in for a treat, buying fabrics, in india but i did not find a huge variety in kerala. |

Kerala is a good place for handloom fabrics. You can get bedspreads etc. in decent elegant colours.
What we mostly see as "traditional" Indian design with elephants etc. is from Northern India, and as far as I know it's cheaper there. |

Besides the state emporiums in New Delhi (in a cluster on Baba Barak Singh Marg), there's a very good selection of fabric and beadspread-type pieces at the Central Cottage Industries Emporium on Janpath. This is another fixed-price government store, and I've found some wonderful pieces there.
Bus I'll second Hans's suggestion: if you see something you love while travelling, get it, because you'll never see it again! |
