kayak or surfboard tranportation to India from US

Have 6'7" kayak, considering bringing it back with me to India from US.

Any experience with kayaks or surfboard transfers to India?

I expect you can bring most anything if you're willing to pay the airlines extra charges. Then what when you get to India with it? What are your plans for hauling this oversize stuff around?

Oh, you have no idea what can be hauled around in India

Objective problems will be to get it into India and to find kayaking partners. A few folks down in Bangalore and mostly outfitters in the north are into it, right now.

I've noticed many Australians carrying surfboards at Heathrow, you could try searching the Australia branch of the Thorn Tree forum for some info.

Like was said earlier, if your willing to pay, you can bring almost anything.

It might be better to buy a good durable inflatable kayak. Much better for traveling with and there are some really nice ones you can get in the States.

If you already know that there are people in Bangalore and the North that are into it, why not just rent or buy and resell in India

Again, I'm sure you can bring most anything, just call an airline and find out what they'll charge you.

thanks for the suggestion.

but many airlines now have a restriction. while i would be calling the airlines before I move, I was looking for creative solutions that usually are the forte of these forums.

inflatable isn't my choice of tool on the water. inflatable infact would be a last option.

As for transporting my kayak in India. i have taken it on the trains here in new york city... imagine that!

I'm imagining....

Your arrival in India.

All the taxis and hotel drivers are there at the arrivals gate, waving their boards with the names on, grabbing passengers' bags and hurrying them away to AC cars to be whisked off to five-stars and corporate meetings, and there... yes! Waving the sign "Bent Gate" is the camel driver, with his asistants, waiting to load up the kayak, the trunks, the equipment, the tents...

Well.... it's fun, as flights of fancy go

Makes for a good starter passage of a book...

I take it that association with kayaks, tents and backpacks conjures up for you, images of slackers...? People unbothered with time and business of the world. Folks too dirty under their nails to handle blackberrys and shoes too unkemptto enter boardrooms?

So be it.

Ah, i like that particular image of the arrivals at the airport, and the surrounding chaos. But there's one glitch. the kayak won't be exposed to it's plastic. It will be covered in tarp, so will not seem much different than my brother alighting off the Dubai flight with his belongings wrapped up in a similar fashion...

Just I saw you coming to undertake some great expedition, perhaps more like an explorer might have done 200 years ago.

Much more interesting than business.

But hey! You can take the cell phone in your palanquin!

Should't be a problem. I have carried my entire scuba gear that way. I have met people in Goa who have carried their parachutes & surf boards ?

Just check for any additional charges with your airlines, size matters to them.

If ur r permanantly importing it into India, it might attract a custom duty of 15%.

Yipes!! Not sure why you conclude we have such an image of you. I actually was thinking you were some kind of adventurer, like those mountain climbers who literally bring tons of equipment with them (& spend hundreds of thousands of dollars for their high tech expeditions). But that you were doing an independant adventure.

Are you trying to tell us something about yourself

I know I'm amazed at how anyone gets around India with any sort of extra luggage since I can barely handle my one medium wheeled duffle bag. Excluding Indians who travel with tons of luggage, gigantic bags of all sorts and do just fine using porters.

You seem to have lots of confidence in your plans so I'm assuming you are very familiar with India travel and are not intimidated by portaging your kayak hither & thither

That would be a sight to see!

I know people that have put their Enfields in storage on a train so a kayak should be no problem.

Getting the kayak to and from the train to wherever your going should be fun to watch!
